Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Imhotep's occupation?

Answer: Mortuary priest

"Death Comes As The End" was set in the Nile Valley in 2000 B.C. In the book's preface, Agatha Christie explained that it was common practice to bequeath property to a mortuary or ka-priest for his services in maintaining a tomb. Imhotep was the mortuary priest for the tomb of a noble named Meriptah, and Imhotep's estate was part of the endowment.
2. What was Renisenb's place in Imhotep's household?

Answer: She was his young, widowed daughter.

Renisenb was Imhotep's only daughter. She, along with her young child, Teti, had just moved back to her father's house after the death of her husband, Khay.
3. What did Imhotep bring back with him from Memphis?

Answer: A beautiful, young concubine

The elderly Imhotep was besotted with Nofret, his young, beautiful concubine. From the moment she entered Imhotep's household, Nofret started making trouble. Allied with the two-faced, old family servant, Henet, Nofret fuelled the discord that brought about the destruction of Imhotep's family.
4. Why did Nofret have Kameni send a letter to Imhotep?

Answer: Kait had struck Nofret in the face.

When Imhotep was unexpectedly called back to Memphis, he left his concubine under the care of Yahmose, his eldest son. When Kait, Sobek's wife, slapped Nofret's face for shoving down one of her children, Nofret had a letter sent to Imhotep telling him of the incident. An enraged Imhotep sent back a letter to Yahmose saying he was turning Yahmose and Sobek out of his house.

This set off the chain of events that led to all the murders.
5. Who was Nofret in love with?

Answer: Kameni

Kameni had followed Nofret from Memphis and offered his services as a scribe to Imhotep because he was in love with Nofret. Unfortunately, Kameni fell out of love with Nofret when he met Renisenb.
6. How did both Nofret and Satipy die?

Answer: They were shoved over a cliff.

Nofret was walking on the path up the mountain to the tomb when she was shoved off the cliff. When her killer realized that Satipy had witnessed Nofret's murder, it wasn't long until Satipy shared Nofret's fate.
7. Who (or what) was thought to have poisoned the wine that killed Sobek and made Yahmose ill?

Answer: The ghost of Nofret

A shepherd boy told that he had seen a woman spreading her hand over the jar of wine. The description he gave of her was that of Nofret, Imhotep's dead concubine. Shortly afterwards, the shepherd boy was found dead.
8. Esa died from having poisoned ointment massaged into her skin.

Answer: True

One of Agatha Christie's favorite methods of murder was poison, and she came up with an ingenious way of poisoning Esa, Imhotep's mother. Esa died from having a massage with poisoned ointment. She thought her trap for catching the killer was clever. Unfortunately, the murderer was smarter than she was.
9. How did Imhotep's old servant, Henet, die?

Answer: She was smothered in a linen sheet and wrapped up like a mummy.

Henet died a cruel death, but she was a cruel and spiteful woman. Her greatest pleaure in life had been causing trouble among Imhotep's family. The killer smothered Henet in a piece of linen and wrapped her up like a mummy. Ipy, Imhotep's youngest child, was the one found drowned in an irrigated field.
10. Bodies really littered the landscape in "Death Comes As The End", didn't they? Can you tell me who murdered Nofret, Satipy, Sobek, Ipy, and Henet?

Answer: Yahmose

Satipy, Yahmose's wife, let loose one too many tirades against his manhood, and when he saw Nofret on the path, he shoved her over the cliff. Satipy talked in her sleep, so over she went, too. Yahmose poisoned the wine that killed Sobek. He then had his faithful shepherd boy to lie about seeing Nofret's ghost poisoning the wine.

He held Ipy's head under the water and drowned him, put poison in his grandmother's ointment, and smothered Henet with linen sheets. Yahmose was fixing to throw his sister, Renisenb, over the cliff when Hori shot him with an arrow. Thank you for taking my quiz on Agatha Christie's 1945 novel of murder in ancient Egypt.
