Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Mary born?

Answer: Greenwich Palace

Greenwich Palace was one of King Henry's favourite places. Hampton Court wasn't used as a palace until much later.
2. According to the novel, Mary wanted to marry Cardinal Reginald Pole.

Answer: True

Reginald Pole was 16 years older than Queen Mary and the son of Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury. They met in Ludlow Castle before he had gone to the clergy and formed a firm friendship. They were never married because, for one, Reginald was a Cardinal and for another, advised Mary against marriage.
3. Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury was beheaded for what reason?

Answer: She stood too close to the throne.

Margaret Pole was a Plantagenet and quite a few people thought that the Plantagenets had a better claim to the throne than Henry VIII.
4. With which queen did Mary *not* have a good relationship?

Answer: Katherine Howard

According to the novel Mary thought Katherine Howard a silly and frivolous girl. Nevertheless she pitied her when she was arrested and later beheaded.
5. Why were the people against Mary's marriage with Philipp of Spain?

Answer: All of these

The people did not want the succession tampered with so they welcomed Mary with open arms. They did not approve of the Spanish marriage because they remembered the terrible executions in the time of King Henry VIII.
6. Who advised Mary to have Jane Grey beheaded?

Answer: Simon Renard

When Mary entered London as the new queen she at first refused to behead the girl, who was apparently "so young and so learned". It wasn't until there were too many rebels flocking together in her name that she reluctantly had Jane and Jane's husband Guildford Dudley beheaded.
7. Why was Mary called "Bloody Mary"?

Answer: because of the persecutions

In the five years of Mary's reign over 300 people burnt to death at the stake for heresy. Mary was apparently against these persecutions and pleaded with her husband and her council for persuasion. The Catholics on the council were against her.
8. Mary was never pregnant.

Answer: True

She wished for a child very much, because she was convinced it was not only the duty, but also the destiny for every woman. However she was already 37 when she married (which was old in those times) and the two times she thought she was pregnant it was only wishful thinking which caused her belly to swell.
9. What is Mary's motto?

Answer: Time Unveils Truth

She states in the very first sentence of the book "I have taken for my motto "Time Unveils Truth" and I believe that is often the case."
10. The story is told by one of Mary's ladies-in-waiting.

Answer: False

The story is told by Mary herself and it is a reflection of her life. Sometimes she referrs to her present state i.e. "Now I know better" or similar statements. The book ends with Mary knowing that her death is near and that she is alone.
