Muddle Earth Trivia Quiz

This should be an easy quiz on Muddle Earth. If you think I've mis-spelt that, it'll be a hard quiz. (It's by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell not Tolkien.) Warning - may contain spoilers. (May also contain nuts. Everything else does.)

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many moons does Muddle Earth have?

Answer: 3

One is yellow, one is purple, and the third (which is a bit erratic) is bright green.
2. Joe the Barbarian has an essay to write for school. What is the title he has to use?

Answer: My Amazing Adventure

"What I did on My Holidays" was the title of Twoflower's account of his trip to Ankh-Morpork. "How the West was Won" is a film. No-one seems to have done anything yet called "When the Vampire Came to Tea", but you wait - all the teachers will be using it now...
3. The foothills of the Musty Mountains smell of what?

Answer: Old socks

Well, they are FOOT hills.... Mustard used to be used in hot foot baths (maybe still is). Soap should be used regularly on feet. Ginger beer shouldn't. You drink it.
4. What is unusual about the Enchanted Lake in Muddle Earth?

Answer: It's up in the air

Floating in the air, with a river flowing down to ground level. And fish dropping out of it at times, to the delight of the lazybirds.
5. In Muddle Earth, Veronica is:

Answer: A budgie

A very astute and sharp-tongued budgie at that.
6. Who organised the stealing of Englebert the Enormous's snuggly-wuggly?

Answer: Dr Cuddles

Grubley was seen carrying it, but it had been stolen earlier. Englebert had been on the rampage long enough for the Horned Baron to get worried and call in help, and for Randalf and Co to get near to Elfwood. The Baron did buy it (as curtains) off Grubley, but didn't know where it had come from. Norbert was totally innocent.
It's not certain who actually took the snuggly-wuggly, but it was either Dr Cuddles or Quentin, probably the latter.
7. Before Joe, Randalf summoned another warrior-hero. Who?

Answer: Quentin the Cake Decorator

Cohen is to be found (or may find you if you are unlucky and carrying gold) in Discworld. Randalf is really an apprentice to the real wizard Roger the Wrinkled. I'm not going to Tell you about William.
8. What is the official toll asked for crossing the Trollbridge?

Answer: A mangel-wurzel

You'd possibly be allowed on for the gobstoppers or walnuts, but that isn't the toll asked for. (I did warn about nuts...) A mangel wurzel is like a large swede (not a Swede). A swede is like a large turnip. Mangel wurzels are apparently delicious if grown and cooked right, but are mainly grown for animals who eat them any old way.

A swede in the USA is a rutabaga. Don't ask me why. It's not got anything to do with this quiz anyway.
9. The dragon that carries off the Rose Petalled Pavilion of Loveliness is called:

Answer: Margot Dragonbreath

Smaug? He was in MIDDLE Earth. Gretchen is a Muddle Earth Dragon (according to an under-gardener - up to you whether you consider that a reliable source or not) but not the right one. Trinklsgrimr? All the more dangerous for being hard to say (SIX consonants in a row and none of them like sh or th) and totally unknown to man. What's that smoke over there behind the hedge?
10. Brenda, the Warrior-Princess, has a battle cat called:

Answer: Sniffy

If you dare call a cat Smelly, you deserve all you get. Oscar isn't a pink battle-cat; he's white, lives in the Forest of Dean, and talks a lot. Baloo did once know a cat called Rover. Really.
11. What name was on the little toothpick that was part of the Horned Baron's cutlery?

Answer: Simon

We never find out who Simon was. Pity.
12. 'Spot the odd one out' time. Which of these is not a wizard of Muddle Earth?

Answer: Louis the Fat

The English and Scots have always been much politer about their kings than the French have about theirs. Louis the Fat reigned from 1108 to 1137.
13. 'Mucky Maud' isn't the real name of the owner of Mucky Maud's Lumpy Custard Club. Who is she?

Answer: Fifi

Ingrid is the Horned Baron's wife. Mimi has a tiny frozen hand in "La Boheme". FooFoo is the naughty little rabbit who runs through the forest being cruel to fieldmice. Grand Opera and campfire song in one question. What next?
14. How many teddies were there in the Tickle Squad?

Answer: A dozen

Twelve pink teddies with blue eyes - exact copies of Dr Cuddles.
15. What was in the clock on Randalf's houseboat?

Answer: A clock elf

Of course it could only be a clock elf in Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell's marvellous world of 'Muddle Earth'. Read the book if you got this far on guesswork only. There's much more in it. (OK, it's really Roger the Wrinkled's boat, but he wasn't there through the book. Randalf lived there anyway.)
