Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the book, what happens to Alicia's lawyer?

Answer: He died when his car exploded.

Alicia was on her way to meet with her lawyer, Leo Weinstein. After she got out of the cab, Leo went by in a silver Lexus and honked his horn at her. He told her he was just going to park the car and he'd be right with her. As Alicia got to the front door of Leo's office building, there was a huge explosion behind her.

The explosion was so big that it broke windows in buildings all up and down the street.
2. Alicia (Dr. Clayton) was a pediatrician. At what kind of medical facility was she the acting director?

Answer: facility for crack babies and children with AIDS

Alicia was the acting director for the Center for Children with AIDS. The director was at home, having developed problems in her third trimester of pregnancy. The assistant director had just left to take a position at another facility. The other pediatrician on staff had a wife and new baby, so he couldn't take on the role of acting director.
The staff of the Center cared for children who were born HIV positive, those who had AIDS, and those were born addicted to crack or heroin. Some of those children had been abandoned, so they actually lived at the Center.
3. What unthinkable event happened when Jack caught up with the guy who stole the Christmas gifts?

Answer: Santa was shot.

Someone had stolen all of the Christmas gifts which had been donated for the children. Jack, wearing a Santa Claus suit, found the thief who was sitting in a panel truck waiting for a buyer to show up. Jack got the thief's attention, then said, "So you're the one who stole the toys I was putting aside for the AIDS babies! No one steals Santa's toys and gets away with it." The thief shot Jack, but Jack was wearing a bulletproof vest under the Santa Claus suit. Jack then beat up the thief, tied him to the bumper of the truck, then drove the truck to the Center where he left the truck full of gifts, along with the thief, for the police to find.
4. Where was the "key" supposed to be hidden?

Answer: in the house that was left to Alicia by her father

Alicia's father had bequeathed his house to her. Her half-brother tried very hard to get possession of the house. He offered Alicia four million dollars to purchase the house. He also challenged the will and got a court order to have the house boarded up until the court case was resolved. Due to her half-brother's actions, Alicia sensed that there was some sort of mystery concerning the house.

She obtained a copy of her father's will, which stated that if Alicia died before or after taking possession of the house, it would go to Greenpeace.

The will also contained a message to Greenpeace which said, in part, "This house holds the key to all you wish to achieve."
5. What was in the safety deposit box?

Answer: an envelope

Although Thomas, Alicia's half-brother, and his backers had already torn apart the inside of the house, Jack found the key hidden in the closet of the master bedroom. The key unlocked a safety deposit box which contained photographs and negatives of a sordid nature, from when Alicia was a child. Jack gave the photographs and negatives to Alicia to shred. Later, he helped her to burn another set which were in Thomas' house.
6. Who or what held the real clue to the mystery?

Answer: a remote control toy car

The real clue was contained in a remote control car found in the rubble of the house. The remote control car was a Land Rover. There had been two references to a rover in the will, in the form of poetry.
When turned on, the toy car always headed in a certain direction.
7. How did Jack eavesdrop on the meeting in the lawyer's office?

Answer: by hiding in a heating duct

Jack rode on top of elevators and crawled through heating ducts until he got to the area where the meeting was being held. While he was listening, he dropped the lens from his head lamp and was almost caught because of the noise it made when it landed on the floor of the duct.
8. What happened at the decoy house?

Answer: all of these things happened

Jack thought he and Alicia were being followed so he drove to a remote, run-down house that he kept as a decoy for that type of situation. Jack and Alicia escaped unhurt, but the men trying to capture them weren't so lucky. At one point, when they pulled down the ladder that led to the attic, a toy cannon came down at them.

When one of the men climbed the ladder, he saw more toy cannons in the attic. A string attached to the light bulb caused those cannons to shoot the man when he turned on the light switch.

Another man who tried to break into a wall safe had his hand spiked by a spring, and two of the other men had to cut through the wall to set him free. They all ran out of the house and some of them hid behind an old truck in the yard, because they thought there was a bomb in the house.

Instead, the truck exploded, killing the men who were hiding behind it.
9. What was the secret?

Answer: broadcast power

Alicia's father had invented broadcast power, which would eliminate the need for electricity. It would also eliminate the need for oil, other than as a lubricant.
10. How did Jack, Gia, and Vicky spend Christmas Eve?

Answer: cuddling and rocking the babies at the Center

Although Jack hadn't planned on spending Christmas Eve in that way, and although he was reluctant at first to hold one of the babies, he had to admit that it felt wonderful. He also admitted that it was a great way to spend Christmas Eve.
