Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story opens with a Shadow agent and an initiate discovering Joanna/Olivia's true identity. Who is this shadow initiate that seems to know Joanna/Olivia so well?

Answer: Regan Dupree

Liam, the Shadow Agent, follows Joanna/Olivia to a charity function where he goads her into chasing after him because he knows her true identity. She follows Liam through a portal and fights him to protect her new life. Regan DuPree, a shadow initiate (Agent in training yet to reach her third life cycle), shows up and kills Liam to prove her devotion to Joanna/Olivia. Regan claims to want Joanna/Olivia to switch sides and reveals her intimate knowledge of Joanna and her new life as Olivia. Regan harasses Joanna/Olivia throughout the novel and traps her into infected her troop with the virus. Regan uses Joanna/Olivia's predictable need for vengeance against Joaquin to keep J quiet about her existence.

She strings Joanna along by giving places and times Joaquin will be; eventually, being a Shadow she sets her up and sends her to Joaquin's house.
2. Acting on Regan's tip, Joanna/Olivia heads to Master Comics and she meets Jasmine, Zane, and Carl. There she discovers they are what sort of creatures?

Answer: Changelings

When Joaquin appears at Master Comics, Jasmine morphs into a "gumby" like shape to hide Joanna/Olivia's identity. It turns out that all the kids at the comic store are changelings, beings that exist to protect the agents' identities on neutral ground by covering them with their auras. Joanna also discovers that without the changelings and their belief in both sides of the Zodiac, the agents would not exist. Each is free to choose a side and Jasmine is of the Light. Joanna/Olivia uses this protection to appear to her first love, Ben Traina, as herself.
3. Carl draws the manuals with the battles between Shadow and Light, but who documents the storylines?

Answer: Zane

Carl and Zane have some sort of psychic ability that allows them to see the battles between Light and Shadow. Zane writes down the story lines and then Carl draws the scenes themselves. Without their work Joanna/Olivia is told that both sides would not exist. Theirs is a sacred charge that must be passed down through the generations so that the battles are always recorded.
4. In the Light's sanctuary, Joanna/Olivia has trouble opening her locker and is told to give it something. After a couple of tries what does she finally give the locker to open it?

Answer: A letter to Ben

This isn't the first time Joanna/Olivia has had trouble opening her locker and it frustrates her to no end. Marlo, a light initiate, suggests she try giving something of herself and explains that sometimes you have to work to get the lockers to open.

Her first two offerings, a memo about how sexy Hunter is and another with an expletive, are rejected by the locker. It is only when she opens up and writes a letter to Ben Trainer, her first love, describing her feelings towards him and how much she misses him that the locker opens.

Inside she finds a ring that her mother left behind that later becomes crucial to her survival.
5. Joanna/Olivia and the Shadow agents are immune to the virus they release, but who else is?

Answer: Hunter

Regan passes the immunity to the virus onto Joanna/Olivia at their first meeting, an immunity that she passes onto Hunter later that evening. Once the virus is released they can still be carriers but with the antidote already in their systems they won't die from it like everyone else. Unfortunately, neither Joanna or Hunter is aware of this until it is too late.
6. The virus set loose by the Shadow agents seems to follow no pattern, affecting all sorts of people. How is it being transfered or passed between people?

Answer: Anything sexual - kissing, sex, touching

This was sort of a trick question. The initial release of the virus occurs during the fireworks show at Valhalla, the one Joanna/Olivia watches from the entrance to the Light sanctuary. The question is how did it get passed on from then....and that's by anything sexual in nature.

The marks the virus leaves on its victims center on the mouths, hands, and genitals showing that simple touching can transfer the virus. It's when feelings of lust begin that the virus takes hold. Unfortunately, the Light doesn't figure this out soon enough to save one of their own.
7. After Joanna/Olivia rejects his drunken advances, who does Hunter infect while trying to make Joanna/Olivia jealous?

Answer: Marlo

The virus is first released during the fireworks show at Valhalla, the one Joanna/Olivia watches from her perch outside the sanctuary. Though she is immune she carries the virus back inside infecting her fellow light agents, where the virus waits to be activated.

When Joanna/Olivia rejects Hunter she finds him making out with Marlo, a light initiate who will soon reach her third cycle and claim her sign. Their make-out session leads to Marlo's untimely death, Joanna/Olivia's understanding of how the virus works, and her expulsion from the troop's sanctuary. Hunter later follows Joanna/Olivia because he couldn't' face the guilt of what his jealousy had caused.
8. Joanna/Olivia discovers how the virus is being transfered and goes looking for Shadow agents at a Swinger's Ball with Cher and Suzanne. Joaquin is there and kidnaps a mortal after she attacks him. Who is this mortal and what does Joaquin use him/her for?

Answer: Ian - To steal and hack the information on Olivia's computer

Joanna/Olivia is introduced to Ian by Suzanne in an attempt to "hook-up" the two of them. Ian attempts to protect Joanna/Olivia from Joaquin but ends up getting himself kidnapped. Ian is considered a computer geek and Joaquin uses his skills to steal Olivia's computer and hack into its files, something the computer illiterate Joanna has not been able to do.

He learns much about Joanna/Olivia and their daughter that she gave up for adoption.
9. Joanna/Olivia once again infiltrates the Shadows' lair with Hunter's help and comes face to face with the Tulpa. What does he offer her during their conversation?

Answer: More power than Warren could ever show her

The first time Joanna/Olivia and the Tulpa meet, he offers her anything she wants. Joanna asks for her innocence, her mother, her life back and he offers a new life. She laughs in his face the first time so you'd think he would know better by now. Yet he does offer her all those things and more, the chance to get the antidote and to save the city.

The only catch is that she must beat Joaquin to Ian in order to win the antidote.
10. During Joaquin and Joanna/Olivia's race through the maze, she learns something from Ian that gives her strength to go on. Which of the following things does she learn?

Answer: Her daughter wasn't fathered by Joaquin

Joaquin is taunting Joanna/Olivia with the mention of Ashlyn, her daughter, when Ian shouts that he's not the father and the blood types don't match. She comes to the realization that Ben is the father and this gives her strength to push on despite the shocks she receives from the maze walls. Joaquin continues with threats to kill Ashlyn that seem to merely push her forward to rescue Ian. Joanna/Olivia will only admit the existence of this little girl to a select few but this information seems to change that.

The Zodiac is passed along matrilineal lines and her daughter may one day take her place.
11. Who kills Joaquin?

Answer: Tekla

Joanna/Olivia rescues Ian and sends him back through the maze while she and Joaquin battle it out. All seems hopeless when he has her pinned to the ground whispering vile things in ear. It is this moment when she realizes what the ring her mother left her does.

She presses the stone and it summons Tekla to them. Tekla tortures Joaquin and then kills him with her son's conduit. Joanna/Olivia lets go of her need for revenge go and allows Tekla to pull the trigger.
12. The Tulpa informs Joanna/Olivia that she can no longer do something. What?

Answer: Leave the Las Vegas Valley

Once Joanna/Olivia wins the race to Ian, the Tulpa insists on delivering the antidote in person. During the exchange, he tells her yet another thing thing Warren hasn't mentioned, that she is no longer able to leave their valley; she is trapped there by her powers.
13. Their exchange allows the Tulpa to make one final offer; what it is?

Answer: Use the antidote, come over to the Shadows or he will start the Apocolypse

Joanna/Olivia realizes that the Tulpa used her to "clean house" among the Shadow agents, killing those disloyal to him. Tired of her refusals and insistence they be enemies, the Tulpa says that unless she delivers the antidote and comes to the Shadows before sundown the next day, she should consider herself an enemy.

She thinks he just threatens war but actually he is threatening the start the Apocalypse.
14. What's the third sign of the Zodiac that was written once the second sign had been fulfilled?

Answer: Kairos' dormant side will reawaken along with the rebirth of those she was meant to destroy

When the Tulpa begins to tell the story that Joanna/Olivia has heard from more than one person, she shrugs it off. He tells her that the previously unwritten third sign was given after the second was finished. The signs come from a legend of a person born with equal sides of Light and Shadow, forever waring within them.

The battle within themselves would mean this person, unlike those born with only one side, would never have to bend to the influence of the stars and would have the ability to choose freely what path their life would take.

They would also choose their allies and crush those adversaries that were once equal in strength. The first sign was the discovery of this unique person, Joanna/Olivia. The second sign was a cursed battlefield that created casualties on both sides, the virus that the shadows released. Before Joanna/Olivia's victory over Joaquin the third sign had not been written.

She is shocked when the Tulpa reveals otherwise and tells her, "The third sign is the reawakening of Kairos' dormant side.

A new journey through the city she was born to, and rebirth into the the troop she thought she was destined to defeat."
15. What does Joanna/Olivia discover in her locker after delivering the antidote to Micah?

Answer: Joaquin's extensive collection of Shadow manuals

Joaquin was also searching for a way to kill the Tulpa. His search led him to collect thousands of Shadow manuals, combing through them for hints to the Tulpa's demise. Joanna/Olivia opens her locker to find his collection and wonders how they got there. Regardless, they may hold the key to ridding the world of the Tulpa.
