Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What author created the series, and wrote the first book, "The Cave of Time," in 1979, as well as many of the subsequent volumes?

Answer: Edward Packard

Packard was born in 1931 in Huntington, New York. He attended Princeton University and Columbia Law School. In the 2005 reissue of the series by Chooseco publishers, R.A. Montgomery's book "The Abominable Snowman" was reprinted as volume number one, although Packard's "The Cave of Time" was number one in the original 1979 launch under Bantam Books.
2. What did the books require readers to do?

Answer: Periodically jump to different pages

The CYOA books were not to be read straight through from beginning to end as with a standard novel. Instead, every few pages, the readers were given a choice as to what they wanted to happen next in the plot, and instructed to turn to a corresponding page for the follow-up.
3. The main character in each book could never be killed.

Answer: False

Part of the appeal of the books was the availability of not only different ways to make progress, but different endings. Some were lucky for your character; others, decidedly not. The protagonist in many of the books could get stuck in time, imprisoned or even killed, depending on the results of the readers' choices.
4. The book "Inside UFO 54-50" had an unusual feature. What was it?

Answer: None of the instructions in the book actually led to the ending

The story involved a quest to find paradise. Readers could only locate the conclusion to the story by flipping through the book.
5. In 2007, Chooseco released the first new "Choose Your Own Adventure" book in nine years. What was the title?

Answer: Forecast from Stonehenge

Chooseco is owned by author R.A. Montgomery. Along with Edward Packard, Montgomery was one of the authors of many early volumes in the series.
6. The third book in the original series was written by Doug Terman. In it, the character traveled to what desert?

Answer: Sahara

"By Balloon to the Sahara" was released in 1979. It was later reissued as "Danger in the Desert."
7. Who was the murder victim in the title of a 1981 volume of the series?

Answer: Harlowe Thrombey

"Who Killed Harlowe Thrombey?" was number nine in the original run of the series. It was written by Edward Packard and released in several different languages.
8. In a 1983 "Choose Your Own Adventure" book, readers got to travel to what part of the cosmos?

Answer: Hyperspace

In this book, the main character's neighbor, Professor Zinka, was carrying out strange experiments. The book was illustrated by Anthony Kramer.
9. In book number six, what was the main character's code name?

Answer: Jonah

The first edition of "Your Code Name is Jonah," released in 1980, was illustrated by Don Hedin, under the pseudonym Paul Granger. The book was later reissued under the title "Spy Trap."
10. The first book of the series to be set in the Old West was released by Bantam Books in 1980. What was it called?

Answer: Deadwood City

An earlier edition had been printed by Lippincott Books in 1978. The Lippincott version was 96 pages; the Bantam Books release, 113.
