Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before the opening of the book, Ben Raines served in Vietnam. What unit did he serve with?

Answer: U. S. Army Special Ops, Hell Hounds

Under Col. Dean Ben served in what is called in the book the roughest, meanest group of killers in the Army.
2. Ben is told by his commanding officer to remember a two-word phrase. What is it?

Answer: Bold Strike

Col. Dean is already planning a group of highly select "Rebels" during his time in Vietnam. He sees that America is beginning to lean hard to the left and believes that a second revolution may be required to bring her back to center.
3. After leaving the Army and serving for a time as a Soldier of Fortune in Africa, what profession does Ben take up upon returning to the US?

Answer: Writer

Writing pulp fiction becomes for Raines first a hobby, and then, after he discovers that he is truly good at it, his full-time job.
4. After the primarily Bacteriological WWIII Ben takes a weapon from a police station, a weapon which will later become famous. What is it?

Answer: .45 Cal Thompson Sub-Machine Gun

While at several points Ben wishes he could find an old B.A.R., he has a long-standing hatred of the M-16A1. The "Chicago Piano" he picks up ends up in later books taking on almost as mystical an aura as Ben himself does.
5. The first of many women Ben will associate with is a rich woman from his own town that he knows. What was her name?

Answer: Fran

Fran is a liberal, semi-racist old-money type, and while she and Ben do have a relationship for a while, they never really begin to like each other.
6. Ben leaves the rich woman from his own town with a group of Christians, where she meets her future husband. What is his name?

Answer: Hilton Logan

Hilton Logan later becomes the President of the restored United States government, and Ben's greatest nemesis. (Thomas Jefferson Johnson was Eddie Murphy's character in "The Distinguished Gentleman".)
7. Ben's brother, Carl, has hooked up with a racist Nazi-wannabe mercenary in the suburbs of Chicago. What is his name?

Answer: Jeb Fargo

Sam Hartline is a mercenary, but he doesn't get introduced until the second book in the series, "Fire in the Ashes". Willie Washington is Kasim's real name. Cecil Jefferys is the black man that Ben meets immediately after leaving Chicago, who ends up first leading the "New Africa" movement, and later becoming Ben's second in command in the Tri-States.
8. After leaving Chicago Ben meets the half-black half-white woman who will eventually become his wife. Name her.

Answer: Salina Kyle

At the hotel outside of Chicago where Ben meets Cecil, he also meets Salina. He is immediately attracted to her, but because of Kasim, who is an extreme racist, he leaves them behind, taking the time for only one kiss from his future wife.
9. At which military base does Ben learn that the US government is being reformed?

Answer: Shaw A.F.B.

While the others are indeed military bases, Shaw A.F.B. is where Ben meets and kills a group of older officers, and incidentally learns more about the Rebels whom he has been, albeit unwilling, placed in charge of.
10. After the incident at the military base where Ben learns that the US government is being reformed, Ben finally contacts his Rebel Army. Who is the first Rebel he speaks to?

Answer: Lieutenant Conger

Ben argues with the poor Lieutenant that a Colonel has no authority to make him a General, but the Lieutenant, who is Colonel Dean's nephew, disagrees.
11. After speaking with the Rebels, Ben acquires a dog named Juno. What breed of dog is Juno?

Answer: Malamute

Juno adopts Ben in a park, after Ben feeds him. Sadly, during the assault on the Tri-States Juno, now old and mostly blind, will be killed, but not before he rips the throat out of an invading Major.
12. Ben meets Ignatious "Ike" McGowan, a former Navy SEAL, while he is running a small radio station. What were the radio station's call letters?

Answer: KUNT

As Ike says "It's a little fuzzy around the edges man, but mighty fine, mighty fine." Ike will later become one of Ben's BattComms (that's Battalion Commander for the non-military types) as well as one of his best friends.
13. Ben also meets a former Navy Captain by the name of Lamar Chase. What is Lamar's specialty?

Answer: Doctor

Dr. Chase will become the head of the Tri-States hospital systems, as well as Ben's personal doctor.
14. Ben eventually takes command of the Rebel Army. He orders them to move into, and secure, three of the former United States. Which ones?

Answer: Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana

This is the area that will become the Tri-States.
15. After forming the Tri-States an attempt is made on Ben's life. Who tries to kill him?

Answer: Carl Raines

Yes, Ben's own brother tries to kill him. The fact that Ben kills his own brother causes the new government of the United States to leave the Tri-States alone for awhile.
16. True or False: Cecil Jefferys becomes Ben's Vice-President after he dissolves "New Africa".

Answer: False

Cecil does becomes Ben's second-in-command, but his title is Lieutenant Governor, not Vice-President. This is kind of a trick question, because if you go back to the introduction, you'll see that I specifically called Ben the Governor-General of Tri-States.

It's also a trick question because Cecil does become Ben's Vice-President in "Fire in the Ashes", after the Joint Chiefs of Staff make Ben the President of the United States.
17. True or False: When Ben's wife is killed, she is pregnant.

Answer: True

Sadly, Salina was 7 months pregnant with Ben's son when she was bayonetted through the back during an ambush.
18. True or false: Ben orders the execution of a 16-year-old male who was drunk driving and killed two elderly persons.

Answer: True

"He's a hard man." "Hard times, man. Hard times."
19. True or False: Ben's adopted son, Jack, is killed during the assault on the Tri-States.

Answer: True

Luckily though, his adopted daughter, Tina, survives.
20. True or false: Badger Harbin, Ben's bodyguard and Zero Squad member, kills the President of the US with a .45 caliber pistol.

Answer: False

Badger does kill Hilton Logan, but he does so with a briefcase full of C-4 Plastique explosive, killing himself in the process.
