The "Xanth" series by Piers Anthony are books I loved as a kid, and I find equally enjoyable today. This quiz concerns the second book in the series: "The Source of Magic". I hope you enjoy this quiz as much as I did revisiting this magical land.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As the story begins Queen Iris had an masquerade ball (in which everyone was garbed in her illusions) where the guests had to each guess who each of the other guests really were. Millie the Ghost won the contest and received a free answer from Humfrey. She wanted to live again so her question was: how could this occur? Which of these was NOT a condition for this to occur?

Answer: Convince the Night Stallion to release her soul

Millie won the contest with 13 correct guesses and after over 800 years really wanted to live again. Humfrey said that in order to do she had to really want to be alive again, had to have her talent restored and had have her skeleton immersed in healing elixir, which was the real issue, as no one knew exactly where her skeleton was located.
2. Once Millie was restored King Trent decided it might be best if Bink left Castle Roogna for some time. He decided to send Bink, Crombie and Chester on a quest. What was the reason for their quest?

Answer: Finding the source of magic

Chameleon and Cherie were preoccupied with their upcoming childbirth and foal and Trent thought that maybe Bink and Chester would like to get out of the castle environs for awhile. He also thought Bink's talent would enable him to be perfect for the job.
3. King Trent transformed Crombie into a creature more suited for the rigors of the Xanth wilderness. What creature did he transform Crombie into?

Answer: Griffin

A griffin was an unreal fighting creature. It could fly, had super sharp talons and a beak that could tear most things to shreds. A sphinx would have been a huge boost to traveling, but was too large for exploring smaller regions, a basilisk would have simply been too dangerous to everyone else and a manticore would have been limited to ground travel.
4. Bink and company eventually arrived at Humfrey's castle in order to gather more information concerning their quest. As per Humfrey's rules they had to face three challenges. Which of these was NOT a challenge?

Answer: A hippocamus

Bink rode the ouroborus rings as they undulated across the moat, dove into the gargoyle's mouth when it opened wide to spout water and threatened to splash the cactus cat with water.
5. Humfrey decided he needed to accompany the group in their endeavor. He also felt that Grundy the Golem needed to go with them. Grundy was serving his year for his question. What was the answer to his question?

Answer: To care

Grundy was a construct of strings and bits of material. He wanted desperately to become real and Humfrey told him the only way he could do so was "to care", i.e. to develop/have emotions.
6. As the group progressed in their travels they met Crunch the Ogre. In order to pay Crunch back for his hospitality they decided to have Beauregard answer his unasked question. Who actually opened Beauregard's bottle and summoned him to answer Crunch's question?

Answer: Grundy

Bink was actually the one who insisted they help Crunch even though the ogre didn't seem to want or need any help. Chester was against the whole idea and Humfrey, who actually had possession of the bottle, was asleep.
7. When the group approaches the Magic Dust Village Humfrey decides to question his magic mirror to ascertain if it can tell him exactly where the source of magic is located. What image does the mirror use to answer yes or no?

Answer: A smiling or crying cherub

The front of many centaurs was considered to be their inferior part and certainly many demons were bad, but Humfrey's mirror used a cherub to signify yes or no although occasionally the mirror would be black or show a ? mark.
8. After the Siren and the Gorgon were overcome the group ventured into the region of Madness. As they entered the region Humfrey discovered an unclassified type of Picture-Wing insect. What type did he discover?

Answer: Crayon Drawing Fly

Being the magician of information of course Humfrey is ecstatic to discover a new species. It's one of the few times in the series you will actually see Humfrey really excited.
9. As Bink and company continue into the Region of madness the constellations seem to come to life and attack them. How exactly do they "defeat" the attack?

Answer: Grundy used the reversal wood splinter

Grundy let each person touch the splinter showing them that the madness of the region was causing the constellations to only appear to come alive. Bink, Crombie and even Humfrey were too immersed in the madness to see the truth until then.
10. When Bink asked the King of the Curse Fiends why they had thrown a curse at Crunch, what was his reply?

Answer: Crunch kidnapped one of their actresses

The Curse Fiends actually lived underwater and believed themselves to be the best actors/actresses in Southern Xanth, and although most ogres are omnivores Crunch never ate any of their people. What he did do was come upon one of their actresses, who was actually a transformed nymph and decide she was the best and most horrendous ogress he had ever seen.
11. Bink met a nymph underground after going through the vortex under the Curse Fiends' city. What was her name?

Answer: Jewel

Bink had actually drank from a love spring and was instantly in love with Jewel. Her job, which would help out tremendously later on (as she was able to travel underground pretty much anywhere) was to plant various jewels throughout Xanth.
12. The Brain Coral was unwilling to allow Bink to continue the quest for the source of magic. Why did it want to halt the quest?

Answer: It was afraid the quest would destroy Xanth

Bink's talent was certainly that powerful that it could have caused the destruction of the Coral, and although it did know the source it had no illusions that it would survive the end of Xanth that could occur if Bink found the true source. To the Brain Coral the only solution was to convince Bink to stop the quest, as it was convinced the true solution would destroy the land of Xanth.
13. The Brain Coral eventually decided to allow the party to enter the cave where the demon X(A/N)th resided. Which of these other powerful demons did Bink NOT come into contact with?

Answer: Z(E/RO)th

The demons were actually almost all powerful entities simply playing games in an aspect most mortals could not understand. The demon X(A/N)th had lost a game and exiled itself to the cave until such time as someone discovered it and decided its fate.
14. Once Bink grasped the situation concerning X(A/N)th he realized he had to make a decision concerning the demon's fate. What did he decide to do?

Answer: Release the demon

He felt that no matter how powerful X(A/N)th was it deserved to have freedom to live its life as it felt best; this would have some huge ramifications on the land of Xanth.
15. What exactly was the "source of magic" in Xanth?

Answer: The demon X(A/N)th

Magic seeped from the demon X(A/N)th; he brought the magic to the land and as long as he remained the magic would remain. That was why the Brain Coral was worried - it knew if X(A/N)th left the magic could leave as well.
