Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old is Alexis Fairburn?

Answer: 32 years

In this chapter, Alexis is being kidnapped by the Smith brothers. They are threatening him with a gun and it says "if the pistol was fired, all those precious memories, that he had been storing for the last thirty-two years would be blasted to oblivion".

This quotation is from Chapter 1. The Smith brothers are paid by someone who wants to kidnap Fairburn to force him to work on a machine. This can't be good.
2. How does Fairburn describe the headmaster, Elliot, in his strange letter to Pritpal?

Answer: Almighty

All of these are positive comments on the headmaster. The letter to Pritpal is very strange and he soon finds out that it is actually a code, only for Pritpal and his friends to see.
3. Where does the Crossword Society meet, every Thursday evening?

Answer: Spottiswoode's bookshop

It is held in a small back room in Spottiswoode's bookshop. A crossword author, who calls himself Gordius, comes to the meeting. This is a strange man though because he seems not at all interested in crosswords and ends up betting, and losing, against James in a game of Hearts.
4. What happened to the Bentley 'Blower' which Mr. Hanson was selling on the first time out?

Answer: Lost a wheel

The first time the car was out on the track it lost a wheel; the second time the engine caught fire. The others I made up. Perry wants to buy it for the Danger Society, if everyone pays a smaller amount and they all pitch in. Although James has a car, he doesn't want to get caught driving it so he doesn't let anyone use it making Perry want to get another one.
5. James saw a chance to escape from the Smith brothers, but in which town?

Answer: Fulford

There was a broken lorry blocking the road. The gap was big enough for James' Bamford and Martin, but couldn't fit the Smith brother's massive Daimler.
6. What colour were the walls in the hospital James found himself in, after he was found wandering?

Answer: Pale green

A travelling salesman found James and brought him to the hospital. James manages to escape the hospital by the iron fire escape. James has to steal a coat and hat to escape.
7. John Charnnage is a strange man who has a collection of poisons, including belladonna, death cap, cyanide and more. It also includes aconite. What is this also known as?

Answer: Monkshood

Monkshood is also commonly known as wolfsbane. All of the others are names of other poisons that John Charnage has. John Charnage is one of Alexis Fairburn's friends but in the end, betrays him (well, actually from the very beginning).
8. What do Charles Babbage and Alexis Fairburn have in common?

Answer: They both went to Cambridge University

This was stated in James and Pritpal's phone call. Fairburn wasn't exactly an inventor since he was just remaking Babbage's machine and we don't know for sure if Babbage wrote crosswords.
9. When James is about to swat Ludwig Smith like a fly with a tree branch, after Ludwig talks about how he'll kill James, what does James say?

Answer: "You talk too much."

In the darkness, Ludwig Smith coudn't see what was happening. James blindly bumped into a branch which sent him backwards. James hoped Ludwig wouldn't notice the branch until it was too late.
10. When John Charnage is talking about not needing to know James' name, except for on his gravestone, what is his comeback?

Answer: "I'd prefer the man who lived to be one hundred and three."

Charnage managed to catch James in the Paradice Club. He was going to poison James but don't be thinking labelled bottles. Anything is poison, even water. It's just that in small doses, it's not harmful. Charnage ends up force-feeding James British Gin.
11. According to Red Kelly, how old is the Charnage Chemical Works?

Answer: 50 years

According to Lou, the Charnage Chemical Works (John Charnage's factory where the Paradice Club is) has been around for 70 years but I asked for Red's opinion, which is 50 years. Most people tend to believe Lou, though.
12. James goes behind a tomb in a cemetery to get to the Royal Docks, with help of the Pneumatic Railway. What is the name on the tomb?

Answer: Charles Bishop

The Pneumatic Railway was built last century (note that this book wasn't written in the present time) and was designed to carry mail so it wasn't comfortable for passengers. The system failed to function properly and it was abandoned. A man called Nesbitt found it while running from the police; his friends helped him get it running.
13. Kelly has never been out of the East End.

Answer: True

Kelly admits this when she was thinking of all the places the Empress, a ship that they are staying on, has been. Unlike her brother, Red Kelly, Kelly Kelly hasn't even been to Scotland mainly because their family is very poor.
14. What did John Charnage survive in a war?

Answer: A mortar blast

Atomic bombs were used in World War Two and in the story, that hasn't happened yet so that's out of the question. Charnage is saying how tough he is by saying the Smith Brothers and Babushka couldn't kill him and nor could a mortar blast.
15. Where is Station X, in relation to London?

Answer: 50 miles Northwest

This part of the book is twelve years later, when James fought in World War Two. Here, Nazi Germany's military codes were cracked by a team of very intelligent scientists. James meets Alan Turing, the man he met in Cambridge, and also Alexis Fairburn. I hope you enjoyed the quiz of the last book of the "Young Bond" series!
