Movie Quotes For You Trivia Quiz

For this quiz, match the quote with the character who said it. Please use the character name in the movie, not the actor. So, "Here's looking at you, kid" would be matched with Rick Blaine, not Humphrey Bogart. Enjoy!

In the movie, Tom Hanks plays Jimmy Dugan, the alcoholic coach of the Peaches, a women's team that is based in Rockford, Illinois. During one game, the Peaches' right fielder Evelyn Gardner (played by Bitty Schram) makes what Dugan sees as a a throwing error. He yells at the player, then she cries at being berated. The prison warden, known as The Captain, delivers the iconic line "What we've got here is failure to communicate." after Luke attempts to escape from the prison. In a later escape attempt, Luke is caught and he repeats the line as a way of mocking the warden.

The line "What we've got here is failure to communicate.", was listed at Number 11 on the American Film Institute's "100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes" list in 2005. "The Princess Bride" is a magical tale from 1987 about a young woman named Buttercup who falls in love with the farmhand Wesley, on the farm where she lives. Wesley leaves to seek his fortune, but word comes back that his ship has been attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts. While she waits for his return, Buttercup is betrothed to the mean prince in the area where she lives, even though she does not want to marry him. Before the wedding, she is captured by a rag-tag group of three outlaws - Vizzini, a small man from Sicily, Fezzick, a giant from Greenland, and Inigo Montoya, a fencing master from Spain.

The group is chased by a masked man who is dressed in black and by the mean prince. As they go, Vizzini keeps sending obstacles to stop the man in black, but each time he makes it through. The man in black is able to knock out the giant, and win a sword fight against the fencing master. Each time that he makes it past an obstacle, Vizzini shouts, "Inconceivable!"

4. "Snap out of it!"

Answer: Loretta Castorini

"Moonstruck", starring Cher and Nicholas Cage in the main roles, was released in 1987. Cher plays a Sicilian-American widow named Loretta Castorini who is engaged to be married to Johnny. Shortly after they become engaged, he leaves to return to Sicily to be with his dying mother. Unfortunately, when he leaves, she engages in an affair with her fiancé's brother Ronny (Cage). After one night together, they wake up, and Ronny tells her that he loves her. She yells "Snap out of it!" as she slaps him across the face. They do end up engaged, though, when Johnny returns because his mother recovered. He assumes that it will be bad luck to remain engaged to Loretta, so Ronny takes the opportunity to propose.

"Moonstruck" was a box office success. It had a $15 million budget and made $122.1 million at theatres. It was also nominated for six Academy Awards. The quote "Snap out of it!" made it to Number 96 on the American Film Institute's "100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes" list in 2005.
5. "To infinity and beyond!"

Answer: Buzz Lightyear

Buzz Lightyear is an animated character who made his first appearance in "Toy Story" in 1995. He appeared in each of the "Toy Story" films through "Toy Story 4". The character also appears in the television series "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" and the animated film "Lightyear" that was released in 2022. Buzz Lightyear was named after Buzz Aldrin, an astronaut who flew in the Apollo 11 mission. A video of Aldrin acknowledging that the character was named after him can be found on the "Toy Story 10th Anniversary" DVD. Tim Allen mainly provides the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the Disney/Pixar movies.

Buzz Lightyear's catch phrase, "To infinity and beyond" has been used by many in modern day. Some mathematicians and philosophers have used the phrase. In Beyoncé's song, "Single Ladies", one line reads "...and delivers me to a destiny, to infinity and beyond." In 2008, a Buzz Lightyear figure was launched into space as a result of a collaboration between NASA and Disney. The goal was to have him act as a space educator and advocate. He spent 468 days in space, setting a record, at that point, for the longest single space mission. He went to the space station aboard the space shuttle mission STS-124 on May 31, 2008. Buzz Lightyear returned to Earth on September 11, 2009 on STS-128. There are a number of videos online that show Buzz preparing for his mission with Buzz Aldrin, and sharing information about space with the astronauts who were aboard the space station.
6. "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."

Answer: Dorothy Gale

"The Wizard of Oz" is a 1939 movie starring Judy Garland. The movie is based on a series of fantasy books by L. Frank Baum about a young girl who is blown into Oz because of a tornado. In the books, she ends up living in Oz, even bringing her Auntie 'Em and Uncle Henry to Oz to live when they cannot pay the mortgage on their home.

In the film, the executives at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer recognized that fantasy films were not doing well at the box office at that time. So, when Dorothy and her small dog were blown to Oz, they decided that the resulting fantasy would be re-worked as being due to head trauma from being in the tornado. When Dorothy thinks she has arrived in Oz, she says to her dog, "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." Technically, she still was in Kansas, having been knocked out by the tornado. However, she dreams about munchkins, witches, a lion, a scarecrow, a tin man, and other fantastical things before waking from her coma. It is only at the end of the movie that it is revealed to viewers that the things she's seen are due to delirium caused by her head trauma. This quote made it to Number Four of the American Film Institute's "100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes" list in 2005.
7. "They may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!"

Answer: William Wallace

Mel Gibson produced, directed, and starred in "Braveheart", a film that was released in 1995. The epic tells the story of Scottish freedom fighter, William Wallace, who led a war against England during the 13th century. In 1280, Scotland was invaded by King Edward "Longshanks" of England. Wallace aims to pull together a fighting force in an attempt to take back his country. He rouses Scottish fighters with a brief speech that ends with this line.

"Braveheart" was a huge blockbuster at the box office. The film was made on a budget of $65-70 million. It made $213.2 million in theatres. As a side note, "Braveheart" was made in the days before computer generated animation. During the battle scenes, approximately 1,600 extras appear on screen, acting as though they are fighting to the death.
8. "You talkin' to me?"

Answer: Travis Bickle

In the 1976 film "Taxi Driver", Robert De Niro plays Travis Bickle, a young man who has been discharged from the US Marines after a stint in Vietnam. He is struggling with PTSD and insomnia, so he takes a job driving a taxi at night. Travis wants to get rid of the "scum off the streets" in New York where he lives and works. At one point in the film, he purchases four guns that he hopes to use for this purpose. He is then shown alone in front of a mirror, drawing a gun before repeating "You talkin' to me?" a few times, then launching into a profanity-filled monologue for a few seconds.

On the 40th Anniversary of the film in 2016, De Niro and the film's director Martin Scorsese told "People" magazine that the line was not in the script. Apparently, De Niro had ad-libbed the line on the spot, as it was being filmed. In, 2005, the American Film Institute (AFI) placed this quote on its "AFI's 100 Years...100 Movie Quotes" list at Number Ten.
9. "A martini. Shaken, not stirred."

Answer: James Bond

Ian Fleming created the fictional British secret service agent James Bond. Bond has appeared in a number of movies over the years, but not all feature the "Shaken, not stirred" quote by him. The first time this phrase appears in a Bond movie is in "Dr. No" (1962), but Bond does not say it in that film. Instead, Dr. No gives Bond a martini, and says "A medium dry vodka martini, lemon peel. Shaken, not stirred." James Bond says the phrase himself in "Goldfinger" (1964). "A martini. Shaken, not stirred" made it to Number 90 on the American Film Institute's "100 Years...100 Movie Quotes" list in 2005.

James Bond is played by various characters in all of the "007" movies. In each, a "shaken, not stirred" martini is typically either ordered by him, or prepared for him by someone else. One funny line using the quote can be found in "Casino Royale" with Daniel Craig starring as James Bond (2006). At one point, James Bond loses a significant amount of money in a poker game. At the end of the game when the bartender asks if he'd like his martini shaken or stirred, he replies, "Do I look like I give a damn?"
10. "You're gonna need a bigger boat."

Answer: Chief Martin Brody

"Jaws" was released in the summer of 1975. The movie is about an enormous great white shark that terrorizes a beach community on the east coast of the United States. Roy Scheider plays Police Chief Martin Brody. In the film, Brody works with a marine biologist and a shark hunter to locate and kill the fish that is attacking swimmers in the water around his town.

About one hour into the movie, the shark has not yet been fully seen by theatre-goers. Chief Brody is in the boat of the shark hunter (played by Robert Shaw). The hunter looks away, and suddenly, the huge shark can be seen coming out of the water and taking a large chunk out of the boat. At that point, Chief Brody says, "You're gonna need a bigger boat." According to a 2016 "Hollywood Reporter" interview with Carl Gottlieb, the co-writer of the screenplay, Scheider ad-libbed this iconic line. The quote made it to Number 35 on the American Film Institute's "100 Years...100 Movie Quotes" in 2005.
