Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Fred Z. Randall's catch phrase in this movie?

Answer: "It wasn't me!"

He said this all through the movie. Whenever he caused an accident, he said it. As Commander Overbeck was about to be the first to walk on Mars, Fred slipped and touched the ground before him. The newspaper headlines read "It wasn't me!", the first words said on Mars!
2. When Commander William Overbeck visited Fred Randall at his office, Fred commented on the Commander's eight shuttle missions. What was Overbeck's reply?

Answer: "Nine actually, but who's counting?"

Randall- "Eight shuttle missions. Eight of them!"
Overbeck- "Nine actually, but who's counting?"
Randall- "Well, apparently you are my friend."
He compared his meeting William Overbeck to a paleontologist hunting dinosaurs his whole life and finally meeting one. Classic line!
3. Before Fred Randall went to train for the Mars mission, his mother made him some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Which of these was NOT one of shapes she made?

Answer: A sun

His Mom kept referring to Fred running away. Fred told his Mom he wasn't, it was just a temporary trip to Mars. His Mom reminded him the last time he ran away it was just to the garage. For the record, he grabbed a rocket shaped sandwich.
4. When Fred Randall got into the centrifuge for the G force test, he told Gordon A. Peacock he shouldn't have just eaten what?

Answer: Liverwurst and headcheese sandwich

This was kind of gross, but still funny. Overbeck commented on how Gordon seemed to have beaten his problem with motion sickness. That was before Fred's comment, of course. The centrifuge tested the amount of G force a body could withstand by spinning the subject at extreme speeds. Fred reached 7 G's, beating Overbeck's record of 6!
5. How many months did it take to get to Mars?

Answer: 8 months

The crew used sleep chambers which allowed them to hibernate for the journey. Ulysses had gotten into Fred's chamber and shut the door, leaving Fred to attempt to fit into the smallest chamber which belonged to the chimp. It didn't work, so Fred was left to entertain himself for the entire eight-month trip to Mars. This also happened at the end of the movie for the trip home.
6. While Fred prepared dinner on the shuttle, Ulysses replaced the food tubes with different tubes. Julie got toothpaste, Overbeck got hemorrhoid cream, and Fred ended up with laxative. What did Ulysses get for dinner?

Answer: Monkey Fruitcake

This was another great scene! Fred couldn't understand what anyone was saying because their mouths were full. The laxative kicked in and he rushed to the lavatory. He fell into the shuttle's chemical toilet and his skin turned blue. The President saw him during a live transmission to the world and asked why he looked like a Smurf! This lead to Fred's rendition of "I've got the Whole World in My Hands". We never did see Ulysses eat the fruitcake in the movie.
7. While walking with Commander Overbeck on Mars, Fred Randall spoke about one of his childhood fears. What was he afraid was under his bed?

Answer: A Baker

Randall- "When I was a kid at night I used to think that there was a baker under my bed. Did you ever have anything under your bed?"
Overbeck- "No."
Randall- "Well did you ever bend down and look?"
Overbeck- "No."
Randall- "Well how do you know there wasn't a baker under your bed?"
Overbeck- "Randall, shut up."

This was just a weird and crazy conversation.
8. What happened to the United States flag that caused Fred to need a quick replacement?

Answer: It fell into the canyon.

Fred pulled too hard and the flag drifted down into the canyon below. Luckily, Fred had worn his flag-print boxers. He managed to pull them out of his spacesuit and placed them on the flag stand. This prompted a call to NASA from the President of the United States, who watched the flag ceremony live via satellite.
9. Which of these movies was NOT referenced by Fred in this movie?

Answer: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Fred called Ulysses Dr. Zaius, from "Planet of the Apes". He also called him an Ewok from "Return of the Jedi". When Julie's mouth was full of toothpaste, he thought she was doing her "Old Yeller" impression. There were also references to "Pinocchio", "The Wizard of Oz" and "Poltergeist", to name a few. Can you find the others?
10. After lift-off from Mars, the lander was hit by debris from the Martian storm, and the computer system went down. Fred did a complete rewiring of the engine computer system for the lander. He needed to close the circuit for the electricity to flow, so he used a coin to complete the task.

Answer: True

Beau Bridges' character, Bud Nesbitt, was appointed in 1968 by President Johnson as Chief of Operations on the Apollo missions. Bud was given three commemorative coins. He gave astronaut Neil Armstrong one for Honor, astronaut Jim Lovell one for Freedom, and the last was for Bravery.

It hadn't done Bud much good, so he gave it to Fred, who used it to close the circuit and help them get home. Fred then sang a verse from a song the Cowardly Lion sang in "The Wizard of Oz". Too funny. Hope you enjoyed my quiz!
