Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1954 George Cukor directed comedy was Jack Lemmon's first credited role? He played alongside Judy Holliday and Peter Lawford.

Answer: It Should Happen to You

"It Should Happen to You" is a romantic comedy about a star-struck lady who encounters Jack Lemmon, a small time documentary maker, whilst strolling in the park. The relationship they form is never straight-forward, but always amusing.
2. What are the two names of Jack Lemmon (one male, one female) in the 1959 classic "Some Like It Hot"?

Answer: Jerry and Daphne

"Some Like it Hot" saw Jack Lemmon's first Best Actor Academy Award nomination. It is an hilarious comedy about two out of work musicians who witness The St. Valentines Day Massacre, and then go on the run masquerading as women. Lemmon begins the movie as Jerry, but slips in to his fugitive female persona, Daphne, with humour, pathos and sheer brilliance.
3. What is the famous final line in the 1960 black comedy "The Apartment", spoken by Shirley MacLaine, as Fran Kubelik, to Jack Lemmon, as C.C. Baxter, after Baxter has declared his undying love for her?

Answer: "Shut up and deal"

In "The Apartment" Jack Lemmon allows his work colleagues to use his apartment for sexual liaisons. Everything is fine until his character falls for the elevator girl, who happens to be the mistress of one of the company bosses. Again. "Shut up and deal" the classic final line is a reference to a game of cards that remains unfinished from midway through the movie.

It's director Billy Wilder's subtle way of letting us know that the guy has finally got the girl.
4. In 1962 Jack Lemmon was again nominated for Best Actor Academy Award for his role as Joe Clay, starring opposite Lee Remick in a tragic depiction of two ordinary people sinking ever deeper into alcoholism. What is title of the movie?

Answer: Days Of Wine And Roses

Directed by Blake Edwards, "Days Of Wine And Roses" is a stark reality check about everyday, average Americans becoming drink dependant. The movie has become required viewing in many rehab clinics throughout The USA. Lemmon lost out on the year's Best Actor, to Burt Lancaster, for his role in "Birdman of Alcatraz".
5. Jack Lemmon's first collaboration with his good friend Walter Matthau came in 1966 in the movie "The Fortune Cookie". What is the sport central to the theme of the movie?

Answer: American Football

6. What is the title of the 1970 comedy film, written by Neil Simon and directed by Arthur Hiller, that sees Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis as a couple from Ohio setting off on a journey to New York to attend a job interview?

Answer: The Out-of-Towners

Jack Lemmon plays George Kellerman in "The Out-of-Towners", a fast moving comedy about the snags and problems that befall a naive couple who take a trip to visit New York. The movie was re-made in 1999 with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn
7. In 1973 Jack Lemmon, starring as Harry Stoner, finally won the Academy Award for Best Actor; what is the film's title?

8. In the 1982 film "Missing" Jack Lemmon plays Ed Horman, a father in search of his missing son in which South American country?

Answer: Chile

9. In which 1992 drama, directed by James Foley and adapted by David Mamet from his own 1984 Pulitzer Prize winning play, does Jack Lemmon star as Shelley "The Machine" Levene, alongside such greats as Al Pacino, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey and Ed Harris?

Answer: Glengarry Glen Ross

The movie "Glengarry Glen Ross" is a reflective drama set over a two day timespan and revolves around four real estate salesmen, who are told only the best performing two will hang on to their jobs.
10. Jack Lemmon plays John Gustafson in the 1993 movie "Grumpy Old Men" and the 1995 follow up "Grumpier Old Men". Who plays his arch-rival Max Goldman?
