Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song was the group's first big hit?

Answer: Walk Don't Run

They heard the song played by Chet Atkins and, unable to play such a complicated arrangement, they simplified it. Johnny Smith, the song's composer, hearing the Ventures version, said he didn't recognize it as his own composition.
2. Who were the two founding members of the Ventures?

Answer: Bob Bogle and Don Wilson

In an interview, Don Wilson said that he and Bob Bogle met when Don was working at a car lot and Bob came in to buy a car. Bob got Don a job working construction with him, the two men bought guitars and history was made.
3. Who was the group's longtime drummer?

Answer: Mel Taylor

The Ventures went through two drummers before they found Mel. Skip Moore didn't want to become a full time member and Howie Johnson left because he wasn't up to touring due to nagging injuries from a car accident.
4. After Mel Taylor's death, he was replaced by Leon Taylor. How is Leon related to Mel?

Answer: He is Mel's son

Mel Taylor died of cancer in 1996.
5. Who was the Ventures' first lead guitarist?

Answer: Bob Bogle

In the beginning, Bob Bogle played lead, and it's his guitar you hear on the original version of "Walk Don't Run". One day bass player Nokie Edwards switched places with Bob and the classic Ventures line-up was born. Nokie later left and was replaced by Gerry McGee. Later, Gerry left and was replaced by Nokie.

After that, the Ventures used whichever of the two was available. It must be nice to have a pool of talent like that to draw on!
6. What year was the group founded?

Answer: 1958

The Ventures date their founding from the time that Bob and Don began to play together.
7. What year was the group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Answer: 2008

2008? Really? Why did it take so long?
8. The Ventures became "beloved invaders" in another country spawning countless tribute bands and mounting annual tours that became national events. What country was this?

Answer: Japan

After their popularity waned in the US they moved over to Japan and continued to tour and make new music.
9. This TV theme was a hit for the Ventures in 1969.

Answer: Hawaii Five-O

Along with "Walk Don't Run", the Ventures played "Hawaii Five-O" at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
10. Who is the "fifth Venture"?

Answer: Bob Spalding

Bob Spalding has played with the Ventures off and on for many years. When Bob Bogle was unable to tour any longer, Bob Spalding stepped in. Laurence Juber is a talented fingerstyle guitarist who played with Paul McCartney and Wings. George Martin was the "fifth Beatle" - their legendary producer. Leo Kottke is my favorite guitar player.
