Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which artist's song includes this lyric: "This ol' highway's getting longer Seems there ain't no end in sight"?

Answer: Garth Brooks

Garth's first chart hit was "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)", which also helped relaunch another country artist. Garth mentions listening to a tape of Chris Ledoux, which sparked interest in Ledoux's music.
The two later did a duet on "Whatcha Gonna Do With A Cowboy".
2. Whose introduction to the country charts went like this: "I'm gonna tell you something you don't want to hear, You never listen when I talk, maybe you'll listen when I walk"?

Answer: SheDaisy

Kristyn, Kelsi and Kassidy first hit the airwaves with "Little Goodbyes". It was a good introduction to the three Osborn sisters.
3. Going back a few years for this one, but who was it: "You can tell the world, you never was my girl You can burn my clothes up when I'm gone."?

Answer: Billy Ray Cyrus

I had the chance to sit in a media-room interview with Billy Ray some years ago at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival. Very interesting fellow, quite soft-spoken. Glad to see he's still doing well with "Doc", his TV show.
4. Who got onto the high part of the charts for the first time with these lines: "Drinkin' was forbidden in my Christian country home I learned to play the flattop on them good ol' gospel songs Then I heard about the barrooms just across the Georgia line Where a boy could make a livin' playin' guitar late at night"?

Answer: Alabama

Alabama's first chart success came from the appropriately named "My Heart's in Alabama". Somwhere in the world right now, the odds are a country station is playing an Alabama number one hit.
5. Do you remember where you were when you first heard these lines, and how you reacted when you heard the artist's name: "Don't look so lonely Don't act so blue I know I'm not the only Girl you run to."?

Answer: Shania Twain

A lot of people may not think of Shania as being country, but "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under" is the best argument in her favour I can think of.
I had the chance to interview her just after this song came out. I had one question about the video. I asked her, bearing in mind her husband was then Mutt Lange, if it was just a coincidence that the dog in the back of the pickup outside the bar is a real mutt.
She started laughing, admitted she had no idea, but agreed the dog sure was a mutt.
6. Which male country artist got onto the charts with: "Everyone knows where you go when the sun goes down I think you only live to see the lights of town."?

Answer: Johnny Cash

"Cry, Cry, Cry" wasn't Johnny's first single, but "Hey Porter" didn't make enough of a dent in the charts to qualify for this quiz.
7. Which country fellow sang these lines: "A little country church on a two-lane road A bride and groom coming out the door White lace dress and a red bouquet Just married written on a blue Chevrolet."?

Answer: Kenny Chesney

Kenny's first chart hit was "Fall in Love", when he was still a long way from carrying the torch for Caribbean country.
8. Now it's the ladies' turn again, so tell me who sang: "I've been a rock and I've got my fences I never let them down When it comes to love, I keep my senses I don't get kicked around."?

Answer: Wynonna

After a very solid career with her mom Naomi, Wynonna hit the charts solo with "No One Else on Earth".
9. Don't take a wild guess on this one: "They said change your clothes She said no I won't They said comb your hair She said some kids don't."?

Answer: Faith Hill

Faith Hill was a "Wild One" when she first hit the country charts. But, as she told everyone a few years later, she's still a "Mississippi Girl" at heart.
10. Don't let up just because it's the last question. Keep thinking about who made it onto the charts for the first time with: "Hello yeah, it's been a while Not much, how 'bout you? I'm not sure why I called I guess I really just wanted to talk to you."?

Answer: Reba McEntire

Reba's first chart success came with a double-sided hit in the days when 45s were still sent out as singles. She covered "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" and had "Three Sheets in the Wind" on the other side.
