The group was originally known as "The Triumphs", and then "The Mascots". Other Chi-Lite hits included, "Have You Seen Her?", "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People", "We are Neighbors", "I found Sunshine", and "Lonely Girl". During their glory years, Tenor-falsetto Eugene Record was the lead vocalist as well as chief composer of their songs.

She at one time seriously considered a career in opera, however, her affiliation with the "Chess Records" record label provided her the opportunity to sing back-up for artist Etta James, Fontela Base, and Stevie Wonder. Riperton sang vocals for several small, unsuccessful groups before teaming up with her husband, composer Richard Rudolph, to start a solo career. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1976, she became an active spokeswoman for the American Cancer Society, and was awarded and received the Society Courage Award from President Jimmy Carter. Minnie Riperton passed away in 1979 at the age of 31 in Los Angeles, California.
