Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An easy starter for you. The violin belongs to which section of the orchestra?

Answer: String

The violin is the smallest instrument in the string section. Other instruments in an orchestra's string section include: violas, cellos, bass and double bass. Antonio Stradivari, probably the best known violin maker, was making the instruments more than 300 years ago.
2. Where does the tuba fit into the orchestra?

Answer: Brass

The tuba is the largest instrument in the orchestra's brass section. Other instruments in the brass section include: French horns, trumpets and trombones.
3. In which section of the orchestra might you find a hi-hat?

Answer: Percussion

The hi-hat is a pair of cymbals on a stand that are operated with a foot pedal.
4. Which member of the orchestra is usually known as the 'Concertmaster or Concertmistress'?

Answer: Leader of the first violins

The violin has four strings. It is played by drawing a horse-hair bow across the strings, causing them to vibrate. The violin strings can also be plucked, this is called pizzicato.
5. Is this statement true of false? The bars of a xylophone are made of metal.

Answer: False

The xylophone belongs to the percussion section of the orchestra and the bars are made of wood. The glockenspiel, a similar instrument, has metal bars and produces a brighter sound.
6. The piano belongs to which section of the orchestra?

Answer: Both of these

The piano can be classified as a percussion or string instrument.
It belongs to the percussion group of instruments because its strings are struck with felt hammers. Striking the instrument, to produce a sound, is the definition of percussion.
As the sound is made by the strings the piano can also be classified as a stringed instrument.
7. Approximately how long would the tubing of a French horn be if it was un-coiled and laid straight?

Answer: Six to seven metres

The French horn was developed from the French hunting horn. It gradually evolved through the 1700s into the instrument we known today.
8. Is this statement true of false? A viola is larger than a violin.

Answer: True

The viola is slightly larger than the violin and therefore has a slightly deeper tone.
9. Steinway and Sons are famous for making which of these musical instruments?

Answer: Pianos

Steinway & Sons have made high quality grand pianos for more that 150 years. A standard grand piano has 88 keys.
10. The cymbals belong to which part of the orchestra?

Answer: Percussion section

As the cymbal is struck to produce the sound it belongs to the percussion section of the orchestra. Cymbals come in a variety of sizes. Two can be struck together to produce a sound, or they can be played with sticks.
