Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Most of Dionne's hits were written by this legendary songwriting team. Who are they?

Answer: Burt Bacharach and Hal David

Dionne first met Burt Bacharach at a recording session in the Atlantic Records studios. He invited her to sing demos for some of his songs, co-written with his then new partner Hal David. She jumped at the chance and the rest, as they say, is history!
2. "Warwick" is not Dionne's real surname. What was her birth surname?

Answer: Warrick

Dionne became Dionne Warwick because of a label misprint on her first record. She tried to have the record pulled so the typo could be corrected, but it was selling so well it remained on the market and her name was never corrected. With the blessing of her parents, she publicly kept the "Warwick" name.
3. Dionne's first hit was "Don't Make Me ____________"

Answer: Over

The song was inspired because Dionne confronted Bacharach and David after they reneged on their informal promise to let her record "Make It Easy On Yourself", giving it to Jerry Butler instead. According to Dionne she angrily told them "Don't make me over!"
4. Which of these marks Dionne's first public singing appearance?

Answer: Singing "Jesus Loves Me" at her grandfather's church

Dionne's grandfather, the Reverend Elzae Warrick, was pastor of St. Luke's AME Church in Newark, New Jersey. He invited Dionne to sing before his congregation and she, at age six, received a standing ovation.
5. One of Dionne's later hits was "I'll Never Love This Way Again". What legendary singer-songwriter wrote and produced this song for her?

Answer: Barry Manilow

"I'll Never Love This Way Again" peaked at number five on the Billboard Top 40 charts in 1979. The Manilow touch is easily identifiable in the recording, especially before the last chorus when there is a sudden stop followed by a strong drum beat and Dionne's powerful vocal.
6. Dionne had a number one hit with The Spinners. What was the song?

Answer: Then Came You

"Then Came You" reached number one on the Billboard charts in October 1974, knocking Billy Preston's "Nothing From Nothing" out of the top spot.
7. In what state was Dionne born?

Answer: New Jersey

Dionne was born in East Orange, New Jersey in 1940. She was raised in a family that was very involved with gospel and church music.
8. Dionne had an aunt known as "Cissy" whose daughter (and Dionne's first cousin) grew up to be a mega star in the 1980s. Who was this singing superstar?

Answer: Whitney Houston

Cissy Houston was a backup singer for some of the top performers in music, including Elvis. Whitney passed away in 2012.
9. Dionne's last appearance in the number one spot on the Billboard charts was a collaboration with three friends called "That's What Friends Are For". Which of these artists was NOT one of the "friends"?

Answer: Johnny Mathis

"That's What Friends Are For" occupied the number one spot on the Billboard charts in January of 1986. Ironically, it was Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know" that knocked it out of the top spot! Dionne did record with Johnny Mathis, but he was not part of the "Friends..." session.
10. In 1967, Dionne recorded a Burt Bacharach-Hal David song that was written for a movie. But her version was not used in the movie. What was it?

Answer: Alfie

"Alfie" only reached number 15 in the Spring of 1967, but she would break into the Top Ten again later that year with a song that became a signature song for her: "I Say A Little Prayer".
