However, Wilde himself was not so lucky, being ostracised and even imprisoned in Reading Jail for his homosexuality, classed as a serious crime in Victorian times. He died in poverty, in Paris, of cerebral meningitis on November 30th 1900.

George Burns was one of the all time greats, who lived to be 100 years old, often making jokes about his age. He was married to Gracie Allen from 1926 till her death in 1964, they were a very successful double act, with Gracie being a natural foil for George's wit! Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the USA, also the 33rd Governor of California, who said many amusing and sometimes profound things, albeit not always consciously. Sadly, he was diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease in 1994, becoming more withdrawn as the disease progressed. He died in June 2004 of Alzheimers related pneumonia, at his home in Bel Air, California. He was 93.

Bruce Lee was a martial arts instructor, being a master of Wing Chun, which he adapted to make his own style of martial arts, Jeet Kune Do. He was also more famously known as an actor in such films as 'Enter the Dragon' and 'Fist of Fury', as well as being a poet and philosopher. Sadly, he died on July 20th 1973, of a recurring bout of cerebral oedema, at the young age of 30.

Answer: Albert Schweitzer

Albert Schweitzer was born in the Alsace region in 1875, during the time it belonged to Germany. It reverted to France after the First World War. He was taught to play music by his father, a Lutheran pastor. At the age of 25 he gained his theological license and became a curate, then at 30 he returned to university to become a doctor of medecine. This he completed by age 35.
This enabled him to become a 'medical missionary' in the Gabon area of Africa, working alongside his wife.

He wrote many treatises on the New Testament. He also wrote observations from his work in Africa and gave lectures all over the globe. In 1955 he was given an honorary membership of the (British) Order of Merit, and founded the Albert Schweitzer Foundation in 1940. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952. There is also an international Albert Schweitzer Prize, which was first given on May 29th 2011. Schweitzer died in 1965 at age 90.

Frederick Ogden Nash lived from 1902 to 1971, an American poet, who made observations on most areas of daily life, usually in a lighthearted way. His style is classed as unconventional and droll, but he was regarded with respect by all the literary giants.

He also toured America giving lectures in schools and made many guest appearances on popular radio and television programs of the day. Although noted as a poet, he was also an author and lyricist. He died in 1971 of complications from Crohn's Disease.

Patton was born in 1885, an American army general, best known for his actions in WWII and his outspokenness to all he met, including his superiors.
He was not noted for 'pulling his punches' and often cursed and swore when addressing his men. In WWI, he was the first officer recruited to the newly formed US tank division. In WWII he commanded armies in Sicily, North Africa and Europe, assuming command of the Third Army in 1944.

In December 1945, Patton was ready to leave Europe for the USA, when he was involved in an accident with a truck, which left him with a terrible spinal cord injury, causing him to be paralysed from the neck down. Twelve days later, he died of a pulmonary embolism, caused by the accident. He was 60.

Aesop was an Ancient Greek fable writer and philosopher. He is best known for the collection of stories known as 'Aesop's Fables,' which are a series of tales each containing a moral. This is where we get the saying 'the moral of the story is...' Aesop lived around 620-564 BC although no documentation of him exists.

The only record of his existence has been found in works by Herodotus, Aristotle and Plutarch.
