Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who said: "I got caught up in the excitement of the moment"?

Answer: Michael Jackson

This was Jacko's excuse for dangling his third child - nicknamed "Blanket" - out of a third-floor window. The incident took place as the singer responded to fans who were waiting outside the Hotel Adlon in Berlin in November 2002.
2. Who said: "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees"?

Answer: George W. Bush

The President said this after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in August 2005. The storm caused flood defences to fail around New Orleans and it is estimated that 80% of the city was eventually flooded.
3. Which sporting hero failed a drugs test then claimed, "My mother gave me a diet tablet"?

Answer: Shane Warne

Australian cricketer Shane Warne is regarded as one of the sport's greatest ever bowlers. In 2003, however, he was banned for twelve months after testing positive for a prohibited substance. Whether or not he lost any weight was never disclosed!
4. Which English Premier League football manager blamed his team's defeat on the colour of their shirts?

Answer: Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester Utd)

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that his players couldn't see each other when wearing their light grey away kit in a match at Southampton in 1996. Losing 3-0 at half-time, the team changed to a white kit ... but still lost the game. They never wore the kit again after this match.
5. Who said, "I was told that I should shoplift"?

Answer: Winona Ryder

After being caught shoplifting in a Beverly Hills department store in 2001 Winona Ryder claimed that her director had suggested she should "try it out". She was caught with almost $5,000 worth of clothes and other items.
6. Which serial killer said, "I didn't want to hurt them. I only wanted to kill them"?

Answer: David Berkowitz

Berkowitz - also known as Son of Sam - was arrested in 1977 and confessed to carrying out eight separate shooting incidents in the New York area, during which six people died and seven were injured. He later changed his story to say that he had only been resposible for two of the shootings.
7. Which US president said, "When the president does it, that means it is not illegal"?

Answer: Richard Nixon

Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, gave this excuse after he was accused of phone-tapping as part of the Watergate scandal. In August 1974 he became the first US President to resign from office.
8. Who said, "I didn't inhale it and never tried it again"?

Answer: Bill Clinton

President Clinton admitted to smoking marijuana while at Oxford university in England in the late 1960s. He was studying philosophy, politics and economics.
9. When reacting to criticism of a love affair, who said, "The heart wants what it wants"?

Answer: Woody Allen

Woody Allen was attempting to justify his affair with the adopted daughter of his partner, Mia Farrow. After they married in 1997, Allen's son Ronan said: "He's my father married to my sister."
10. And finally, an excuse of biblical proportions. Who said, "The serpent beguiled me and I did eat"?

Answer: Eve

Eve blamed a snake for making her eat the forbidden fruit. Though the bible doesn't explicitly state what type of fruit was eaten, renaissance painters began depicting the fruit as an apple and the image has stuck.
