Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What jazz musician, born in Cheraw, South Carolina, is considered by most music historians to be one of the foremost shapers of the trumpet style bebop?

Answer: Dizzy Gillespie

The way Dizzy's trumpet received its unforgettable shape is somewhat of folklore. It's been said that while he was dancing he accidentally stepped on his trumpet bending it. Too poor to buy another one, he continued playing with this bent one, attracting attention wherever he went. Soon people were running to their local music supply stores asking for a "Dizzy Gillespie" trumpet.
2. On August 12, 1781, Robert Mills, one of the first American born architects, was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He is known for building some of the nations most amazing structures, including prisons, bridges, and hospitals. Can you name his most famous?

Answer: The Washington Monument

Mills also designed the Treasury, the Old Patent Office in D.C., and the wings of Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

Answer: Jesse Jackson

Jesse Jackson ran for president two times and has received over 40 awards for being one of America's top ten most admired men.
4. Joe Frazier, who was born near Beaufort, South Carolina, won the 1964 Olympics gold medal for boxing. In what City did this take place?

Answer: Tokyo

It's kind of funny how Joe made it to the Olympics. He lost a fight to Buster Mathis in the Olympic trials, but Buster ended up breaking a finger later on, which led to Joe Frazier taking his place in the Olympic games.

8. Did you know we had a government official that served as Vice President under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson? Who is this South Carolina native, born near Abbeville, South Carolina?

Answer: John C. Calhoun

Though Strom Thurmond might have seemed old enough, it was not he. John C. Calhoun graduated from Yale after only two years. He was thought of as the "Greatest South Carolinian Who Ever Lived". His last words on his deathbed were "the South, poor South".
9. Althea Gibson, born near Sumter, South Carolina, was named athlete of the year in 1957 after winning the All-England Women's singles at Wimbledon. What other sport was she highly recognized in?

Answer: Golf

10. Vanna White, born in Conway, South Carolina, became known as the famous "Letter Turner" of what popular game show?

Answer: The Wheel of Fortune

Ok, this one was a "give me", but I figured I'd throw an easy one in at the end. I hope you enjoyed my first quiz!
