Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At what age are young ladies allowed to serve a mission for the LDS Church?

Answer: 19

President Thomas S. Monson changed the age for women to serve a mission to 19 from 21 in 2012. This change was expected to significantly increase rates of missionary service among young LDS women. Young LDS men can serve missions for their Church when they reach the age of 18.
2. One method that missionaries use to share their message with others is by knocking door to door. How do missionaries refer to this method?

Answer: Tracting

Some missionaries in more tropical areas find it difficult to tract in the extremely hot and humid weather. For this reason, they are required to wear only the short-sleeved variety of white-collar shirt, as opposed to a white shirt, tie, and a jacket.
3. In 1986, the LDS Church changed the format of the lessons, or discussions, that missionaries use when sharing their message to those wanting to hear it. How many discussions were there previous to this change?

Answer: 6

The new method that the LDS Church came out with is entitled "Preach My Gospel". The six-step method is known as "The Uniform System for Teaching the Gospel". The six steps are "The Plan of Our Heavenly Father", "The Gospel of Jesus Christ", "The Restoration", "Eternal Progression", "Living a Christlike Life", and "Membership in the Kingdom". The new way of teaching scaled back the memorization of scriptures and allowed missionaries to insert their own stories and beliefs in their faith.
4. What is it that elders, who serve for two years, burn to commemorate the six-month mark of their mission?

Answer: Tie

One old missionary tradition includes commemorating when one has reached a certain point in their mission by burning various articles of clothing. White shirts are burnt on the one-year mark.
5. What nickname is affectionately given to the brand-new missionary?

Answer: Greenie

When a missionary first enters the mission field (the area of the world they are assigned to), he/she is paired with a more experienced missionary called a trainer. Generally, missionaries are assigned to be trainers when they are at least halfway through their mission. This trainer is assigned to show them the ropes of missionary work
6. Which of the following languages was the first language to surpass English as the most widely spoken native language among LDS church members?

Answer: Spanish

Missionaries are sent to all different parts of the world to share their message. Since this has occurred, English is no longer the most widely spoken language among the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. More than 3.9 million Spanish-speaking members of the Church exist.
7. Before a missionary is sent out into the mission field, he/she is sent to what is called the MTC in order to learn the basic rules of missionary work. What does MTC stand for?

Answer: Missionary Training Center

The main Missionary Training Center (MTC) is located in Provo, Utah just north of the Brigham Young University campus. Other MTCs have been built more recently in countries such as England and Brazil to assist in training missionaries who will be serving in those parts of the world.
8. In order to keep their minds focused on their duties, missionaries have specific guidelines that they must live by. Which of the following is an activity that missionaries ARE allowed to participate in?

Answer: Playing basketball

Missionaries are only allowed to listen to tasteful music that goes in accordance with the principles taught by the church. They are also not allowed to leave the boundaries of their assigned area without special permission (which rules out long trips of almost any kind).
9. Typically, mission presidents serve for what length of time?

Answer: 3 years

Each individual mission, or area, has what is called a mission president. He oversees the missionaries, missionary work and other related affairs within the mission. These men are called away from their jobs and otherwise normal lives to serve in this capacity.
10. When a missionary finally returns home, he/she gives a special talk in church in which they share their experiences as a missionary. The name of this type of talk is called what?

Answer: Homecoming talk

This homecoming talk gives the people that they know the chance to hear about the incredible experiences that they have had over the past 1 1/2 - 2 years as a missionary. It is generally followed by a small homecoming dinner at the missionary's home for family and friends.
