Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the seder?

Answer: a meal that commemorates the Passover.

The seder is the Jewish meal of Passover. It is both a meal and a ritual, with every item on the plate having a specific meaning.
2. Name the author: "The Tao that is the true Tao cannot be named."

Answer: Lao Zi

In most translations, this is the first passage of the Tao Te Ching. This work is attributed to Lao Zi (literally translated as "old master"). While Taoism is not focused on any one scripture, the Tao Te Ching is one of the most important works of Taoism.
3. Which dish may be eaten by Jews who uphold kosher dietary rules?

Answer: lamb chops

Kosher dietary rules originate in the book of Leviticus. Beef stroganoff is typically prepared with beef and sour cream. This violates Kashrut (Kosher) in that it combines meat and dairy in the same meal. According to Kashrut, rabbits may not be eaten because they do not have hooves. Likewise, all seafood must have fins, a backbone, and scales, therefore lobster is off the kosher menu. Lamb, on the other hand, fits all the criteria.
4. Which of these is not one of the major sects of Buddhism?

Answer: Mirayana

Theravada, also called Hinayana or the Arhat way, is predominant in South East Asia. Mahayana is mostly practiced in China, Japan, and Korea. Vajrayana is practiced by Tibetan Buddhists and other esoteric Buddhist sects.
5. From Hinduism: Krishna is regarded as an avatar of which deity?

Answer: Vishnu

Adherents of Hinduism believe Krishna to be the avatar of Vishnu as depicted in the Bhagavad Gita - a section of the epic Mahābhārata. However, some (notably the Hare Krishna) worship Krishna unto himself.
6. Which philosopher stated, "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world and the soul of soulless conditions?"

Answer: Karl Marx

"Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right" (1844) is one of Marx's earlier works. It may be surprising to hear Marx express these sentiments, but they are early in his argument. In this piece, he claims that while religion may ease the suffering that people experience, it lulls them into complacency and in so doing, inhibits the action that they might otherwise take to correct the wrongs of society.
7. Which Christian theologian wrote "Summa Theologica"?

Answer: Thomas Aquinas

Aquinas (1225-1274CE) melded Christian theology with Aristotelian logic in "Summa Theologica".
8. Which of the following is not an example of "Black Atlantic Religion," i.e. an American religion with West African religious influences?

Answer: Lamentato

Condomble (mainly of Brazil), Voodoo (mainly of Haiti), and Santeria (mainly of Cuba) all contain aspects of West African religious beliefs, practices, and material culture (ritual objects and artwork for example).
9. From Islam: What was the occupation of the Prophet Muhammad's first wife?

Answer: businesswoman

Khadija (ca. 555-619 C.E.) was a successful in running her own business and was quite wealthy. She is notable for being the first convert to Islam. Though she inherited her wealth through former husbands and her father, she was clever with finances in her own right.
10. From the Church of Latter Day Saints: What was the name of the angel who appeared to Joseph Smith?

Answer: Moroni

Joseph Smith (1805-1844CE), founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, stated that Moroni visited him numerous times and revealed to him the contents of the Book of Mormon.
