Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It's Saul about endorsement. Which Saul was anointed by a prophet named Samuel?

Answer: King Saul

"Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul's head and kissed him, saying, "Has not the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance?"" (1 Samuel 10 v. 1)

Despite news of his conversion, many Christians remained afraid of the apostle Saul and it appears that Barnabas had to act as his endorser:
"When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus" (Acts 9 v. 26-27).
2. It's Saul about the money. Which Saul continued to bring in income from making tents, despite being called to loftier things?

Answer: The apostle Saul

"After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them." (Acts 18 v. 1-3)
3. It's Saul about pedigree. Which Saul was born into the tribe of Benjamin?

Answer: Both Sauls

When we first meet the future King Saul, his father is introduced to us as:
"... a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose name was Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bekorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin" (1 Samuel 9 v. 1).

The apostle Saul reveals the identity of his tribe in Philippians 3 and in Romans 11:
"I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin" (Romans 11 v.1).

Another celebrity Benjamite is Mordecai from the story of Esther (Esther 2 v. 5).
4. It's Saul about appearance. Which Saul is described as being at least a head taller than his peers?

Answer: King Saul

"There was a Benjamite, a man of standing, whose name was Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bekorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome a young man as could be found anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else." (1 Samuel 9 v. 1-2)

The Bible does not give a height for the apostle Saul but he has traditionally been seen as a short man. One early Christian writer, Pseudo-Chrysostom, describes him as a man of three cubits, approximately 4' 6''.
5. It's Saul about family. Which Saul was saved from a death plot by his nephew?

Answer: The apostle Saul

"The next morning some Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul. More than forty men were involved in this plot. They went to the chief priests and the elders and said, "We have taken a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul. Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him before you on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about his case. We are ready to kill him before he gets here." But when the son of Paul's sister heard of this plot, he went into the barracks and told Paul." (Acts 23 v. 12-16)

King Saul's family ties were considerably looser. His daughter Michal was married to Saul's nemesis David and, as well as trying to kill David on various occasions, he married her off to another man (1 Samuel 25). He also both cursed (1 Samuel 14) and threw a spear at son Jonathan (1 Samuel 20).
6. It's Saul about the message. Which Saul was given a message from God straight from the mouth of a donkey?

Answer: Neither Saul

Donkeys (of the non-speaking variety) do come into King Saul's story. He first encountered the prophet Samuel whilst searching for his father's lost donkeys. Saul must have realised that Samuel possessed prophetic powers when met with the opening gambit:
"As for the donkeys you lost three days ago, do not worry about them; they have been found" (1 Samuel 9 v. 20).

The apostle Saul may not have encountered any donkeys but he certainly reckoned many of his opponents to be asses!
7. It's Saul about rebranding. Which Saul became known by a different name?

Answer: The apostle Saul

Paul is the Latin version of the Hebrew name Saul. The name change occurs during Acts 13 and this reflects his moving beyond Hebrew-speaking circles as he sets off on the first of his missionary journeys. The progression can be charted as follows:
(1) Saul and Barnabas are commissioned in a prayer meeting at Antioch (Acts 13 v. 1-3).
(2) They sail to Cyprus where they first visit the Jewish synagogue - still Saul (v. 4-5).
(3) They encounter a Jewish sorcerer named Bar-Jesus or Elymas - still Saul (v. 6).
(4) The sorcerer's boss is the Roman governor and he sends for them because he wants to meet them - still Saul (v. 7-8).
(5) It is as Saul is speaking in the presence of the Roman governor that the change takes place:
"Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, 'You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right!'" (v. 9-10).
Thereafter, in Acts, Saul is always referred to solely as Paul.
8. It's Saul about exposure. Which Saul had citizenship rights throughout the Roman Empire?

Answer: The apostle Saul

Saul was born in Tarsus, capital of the Roman province of Cilicia and also the place where Cleopatra met Mark Anthony. His citizenship took on particular significance in Philippi where he was beaten and held without trial, both illegal acts against a Roman citizen. No wonder the magistrates were alarmed to discover the truth and went into public-relations overdrive in an attempt to placate him (Acts 16 v. 38-39).

The only things roamin' in the story of King Saul were his donkeys.
9. It's Saul about prophets. Which Saul is described as engaging in ecstatic activity?

Answer: Both Sauls

King Saul is recorded as prophesying in 1 Samuel 10 as well as in chapter 19:
"So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even on him, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth. He stripped off his garments, and he too prophesied in Samuel's presence. He lay naked all that day and all that night. This is why people say, 'Is Saul also among the prophets?'" (v. 23-24).

Meanwhile, the apostle Saul describes an ecstatic trance as he writes to the church in Corinth:
"I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know-God knows. And I know that this man-whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows- was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell" (2 Corinthians 12 v. 1-4).
10. It's Saul got to come to an end. The Bible records which Saul as dying at the age of 72 (allowing for some scholarly debate about translation)?

Answer: King Saul

Saul was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-two years." (1 Samuel 13:1) The Hebrew text here is not easy to translate but the NIV and most modern translations opt for the rendering above and place alternatives within the footnotes.

The New Testament does not record the death of the apostle Saul but early Christian tradition has him martyred in Rome sometime in the mid-60s AD.
