Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We all know that Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Israel. But where did Coptic Christianity originate?

Answer: Egypt

According to Coptic tradition, the apostle Mark established Coptic Orthodox Christianity in Egypt in the First Century. The Coptic Church is centered in Alexandria. Boutros Boutros-Ghali, who served as Secretary-General of the United Nations in the mid 1990s, is a Coptic Christian.
2. Where is Shinto, a combination of ancestor worship and spirit worship, the indigenous religion?

Answer: Japan

Kami are the spirits of Shintoism, and are often represented in the West as spirits of nature. Amaterasu is the sun goddess, and one of the major deities.
3. Freddy Mercury of Queen was a Zoroastrian, and was born on the island of Zanzibar, off the coast of East Africa. But where did Zoroastrianism originate?

Answer: Persia

Zoroaster, the Persian prophet, taught about the worldly struggle between the forces of good and those of evil. Zoroastrianism is an early form of monotheism, and many feel that it influenced Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Zoroaster's death is placed by various sources as anywhere from 6000 to 570 B.C. Today there are about 150,000 to 200,000 Zoroastrian, mostly in India and Iran.
4. Prince Siddhartha Gautama founded the religion of Buddhism. But today Buddhists make up less than 1% of the people in the nation where the Buddha lived. What nation is that?

Answer: India

In the 2001 census in India Hindus made up over 80% of the population, followed by Muslims (over 10%), Christians (about 2%), and Sikhs (nearly 2%). The great spread of Buddhism to China and Southeast Asia came during the reign of the Maurya emperor Asoka, who lived in the Third Century BCE.
5. Although perhaps more a philosophy than a religion, Taoism (Daoism) is most followed where?

Answer: China

Founded by Laozi, Taoism seeks the perfect balance of natural forces yin and yang.
6. Although often dismissed as a serious religion, thanks to its treatment in many Hollywood films, Voodoo is most associated with which Western Hemisphere nation?

Answer: Haiti

According to "How Voodoo Works," voodoo features one supreme god, but there are "hundreds of thousands" of spirits or lesser gods believers deal with. Followers are possessed by these spirits, called loa in Haiti. The religion results from a mixture of animistic West African religions brought by slaves to the New World, the animism of Carib natives, and the Roman Catholicism of the colonizers of the West Indies.
7. Mormonism, the religion of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, is based today in Utah. But in which U.S. state did this religion begin?

Answer: New York

Through divine visions, Joseph Smith Jr, was led to discover two buried golden plates, which he transcribed into the Book of Mormon. The church was organized on 6 April, 1830, in Fayette, Seneca County, New York.
8. Zen Buddhism is most often associated with which nation?

Answer: Japan

Although Zen Buddhism began in China, where it is called Ch'an, most Westerners associate it with Japan. Japanese Zen is most often associated with the use of riddles for meditation. Both the terms "Zen" and "Ch'an" come from the Sanskrit "dhyana," meaning meditation. Perhaps the most famous Zen riddle is "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"
9. Huitzilopochtli, god of war, fire, and the sun; Tlaloc the rain god; Itzli, god of sacrifice and stone knives; and Quetzalcoatl, creator god, were all worshiped by what people?

Answer: Aztecs of Mexico

The Aztecs believed that the gods needed constant supplies of fresh blood, which would explain why Itzli might be an important deity. Creation, the sun, and the rain include gods within probably any people's pantheon. It is said that Montezuma II believed the Spanish invader Cortes might be the returning Quetzalcoatl, who had left for parts unknown, but vowing to return, and no doubt contributed to the Aztecs' downfall.
10. The old theory of Aryans invading the Indus Valley and bringing Hinduism with them are falling out of favor, and the origins of the religion now seem to be impossible to pinpoint. But sources still point to the Vedic tradition as the religion's core, this being four collections of books called the Vedas. What does the word "veda" mean in Sanskrit?

Answer: knowledge

My search for the origins of Hinduism was very eye-opening and pretty much negated most of what the history books I've always taught out of say. The English cognate for "veda" is "wit," as Sanskrit and English are both Indo-European languages. The newest theories of the origin of Hinduism seem to indicate that it grew out of the Aryan experience in the Indus Valley, rather than having been brought there.
