Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A giant system of stars would be defined as a what?

Answer: None of these

There are literally millions of known galaxies in the universe. We live in the spiral-shaped Milky Way galaxy, on the end of one of the 'arms'.
2. When matter spins toward a black hole, what kind of energy does it release?

Answer: X-ray energy

We know of about half a dozen small black holes and a few huge ones. Although we can't see them (they are invisible) we can detect them by the huge amounts of X-ray energy they make--or rather, the energy drawn to them makes.
3. What is it called when the Moon is blocked out by the earth's shadow?

Answer: lunar eclipse

Sometimes the eclipses we see are solar, meaning the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth. When a lunar eclipse occurs, the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon and the Earth casts its shadow on the Moon, temporarily obscuring it from our view.
4. The _____ _____ is also known as the Northern Lights.

Answer: aurora borealis

The northern lights are not, as some believe, caused by the earth's magnetic field. (if so, we would see it all the time) It is caused by energized solar wind from the Sun REACTING with our magnetic field.
5. A star that flares up for a short time and then returns to its original magnitude is a:

Answer: Nova
