Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After 44 years of existence, this team finally made it to the promised land in 2005, but were stopped cold by the Chicago White Sox four games to none. Who was this team?

Answer: Houston Astros

Except for the Phillies, the others were American League teams. The Astros bought a ticket to the World Series by beating Atlanta and St. Louis in the playoffs. The Astros, blessed with the arm of their 20-game winner Roy Oswalt, did not have one player in the starting line-up hit over .300 for the season.
2. Known as the 'Earthquake Series', this team skunked the San Francisco Giants in 1989, then experienced being skunked themselves by the Reds in 1990. Which team was this?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

The others were all National League teams. The A's had the speed of Rickey Henderson and the bats of McGwire and Canseco, but it was useless as the Reds allowed only eight runs in the 1990 series.
3. In the third of their fourth consecutive World Series in 1963, the Los Angeles Dodgers skunked this team that had a battery of Whitey Ford and Elston Howard. Which team smelled during this series?

Answer: Yankees

The Yankees were favored in the series after winning 104 games in the season. The Dodgers had the arms of Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax, and the Dodgers allowed only four Yankee runs in the entire series.
4. The first team in history to walk away from a World Series without a win occurred in 1907. Who was this team that was turned away by the Chicago Cubs?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

Even with Ty Cobb, Sam Crawford, and three 20-game winners, the Tigers were not effective against the 107-game winning Cubs. The series went 4-0-1.
5. In 1954, this amazing team won 111 games in the 154-game season, but somehow managed to be skunked in the World Series by the New York Giants. Which team had it all, then lost it all?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

Atlanta and Los Angeles were NL teams but did not exist in 1954. The Indians had the bats of Bobby Avila and Vic Wertz, and with the arms of Bob Lemon, Early Wynn, and Bob Feller, the series turned out to be one of the biggest upsets in World Series history.
6. Both the 2004 and 2005 World Series resulted in skunks. Which 2004 team was skunked by the Boston Red Sox?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

The Red Sox ended the so-called 'Curse of the Bambino' after over 80 years by taking out the Cardinals four games to none. The 2005 series saw the White Sox skunk the Astros.
7. In 1966, Sandy Koufax finished out his great career with the Cy Young award, Hutch Award, Triple Crown, and TSN Pitcher of the Year award. It wasn't good enough as his team was skunked by the Robinson's of the Baltimore Orioles. Who did the Orioles skunk in this series?

Answer: Dodgers

Frank Robinson was in his first season with the Orioles after coming from Cincinnati. For his efforts, Frank won the AL MVP, and was the first player in history to win the award in both leagues.
8. Which team was the first in history to be skunked in three different World Series?

Answer: New York Yankees

They appeared in the most World Series in the first 100 years of the Major Leagues. They ate their first winless series against the 1922 New York Giants, then the 1963 Dodgers, then against the Big Red Machine of Cincinnati in 1976.
9. With the names of Chris Chambliss, Thurman Munson, Graig Nettles, Catfish Hunter, and Ed Figueroa, this team was skunked by the 1976 Cincinnati Reds. Which team was it?

Answer: Yankees

The Big Red Machine of Cincinnati had their own all-star cast in the names of Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, Johnny Bench, and Ken Griffey.
10. In the first 100 years of Major League baseball, only one team had dished up two consecutive World Series skunks. This team was the Yankees. Not only that, but they did it three separate times against their opponents. They also provided the century's last skunking in 1999 against which team who had the NL MVP?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

In 1998, the Yankees skunked the San Diego Padres. The Braves were at the losing end in 1999 after appearing in their fifth World Series in the 1990s. The Braves scored nine runs in the series, with five coming from game three. Atlanta's Chipper Jones won the 1999 NL MVP.
