The blast on September 27th was Mark's 457th home run of his career. He hit the pitch off Expo pitcher Carl Pavano. McGwire hit two home runs in the 6-3 win over Montreal, but it was his seventh inning shot to reach the milestone.

The 1913 Athletics had Charles Albert "Chief" Bender, who went 21-10 in the season. His Philadelphia team led by the legendary Connie Mack at the helm, defeated the New York Giants four games to one. Ironically, the Athletics were also the first team to go to a World Series without having a 20-game winner.

They did this the following season in 1914, and were skunked by the Boston Braves, four games to none. The first team to actually go to a World Series with one 20-game winner was the 1908 Detroit Tigers, with Ed Summers on the mound who went 24-12. But, the Tigers lost to the Cubs in the series four games to one.

Answer: Harmon Killebrew

In 100 seasons of Major League baseball, Killebrew had the highest total by far, 297, before playing in his first series in 1965. His Twins lost to the Dodgers in the series, four games to three. Harmon hit a 573 career home runs. When Babe Ruth went to his first World Series, he had a total of four career home runs, Mays had 20, and McGwire had 84.

Answer: Bobby Shantz

Shantz won a total of eight Gold Gloves. His consecutive streak ran from 1957-1964. From 1957-1960, they were all with the Yankees. Then from 1961 until he retired after the 1964 season, Bobby played for the Pirates, Colt .45s, Cardinals, Cubs, and Phillies.

As an Athletic, Shantz also won the 1952 American League MVP over three Yankees, Allie Reynolds, Mickey Mantle, and Yogi Berra, respectively.

The four were Cy Williams who hit 41 for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1923. Ted Williams hit 43 for the Red Sox in 1949. Billy Williams of the Chicago Cubs hit 42 in 1970. Finally, Matt Williams of the San Francisco Giants hit 43 in 1994 to lead the National League. It would be the only 40 home run season for all the Williams' listed.

Bonds did it with the Giants, Yankees, Angels, Rangers, and Indians. Nixon's five teams were the Expos, Braves, Red Sox, Rangers, and Blue Jays. Rickey Henderson accomplished his with the Athletics, Yankees, Padres, Mets, and Mariners. Coleman stole more than 30 in a season 10 times in his career, with the Cardinals, Mets, and Royals.

Answer: Jeff Burroughs

They were all number one overall picks except for Jackson who was a number two pick, and they all hit 40+ home runs in a season. Burroughs was drafted by the Washington Senators number one in 1969. After seven seasons with the Senators (later Texas Rangers), he was traded to the Atlanta Braves for the 1977 season.

It was then and there that Jeff hit 41 home runs in the season. It would be his only 40 home run season of his career. As a Ranger, Burroughs won the AL MVP in 1974 when he hit only 25 home runs in the season.

Answer: Arky Vaughan

Vaughan was the Dodgers' third baseman in the season. This was the third altercation for the two in the season, and the latter resulting in many blows being thrown. Amazingly enough, neither was suspended but Vaughan was fined for "his disrepect" to Durocher.

It was Vaughan's 11th season in the Majors, after playing for 10 in Pittsburgh. Vaughan would go on to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1985, while "Leo the Lip" would go on to win over 2000 games, and be inducted into the hall in 1994.

Answer: Frank Robinson

Robinson almost made it with his 49 with the Orioles in 1966. With 586 career home runs, that showed the consistency with him. In 1966, in his first season with Baltimore after being traded from the Reds, Frank won the AL MVP, Triple Crown, and World Series MVP.

Paul Waner was the first "Paul" to have over 3000 hits in a career. The 16-season Pittsburgh Pirate played from 1926-1945, and retired with 3152 hits. His brother Lloyd Waner, shared the outfield on the Pirates with Paul from 1927-1940. Lloyd retired with 2459 career hits.

The other "Paul" to get 3000 hits was Paul Molitor. Molitor spent 15 of his 21 seasons as a Milwaukee Brewer. He retired with 3319 hits in 1998. Both Paul's were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Brother Lloyd was also an inductee.
