Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which California Major League team played their first home game in the state in 1961?

Answer: Angels

The Angels began their endeavors under the management of Bill Rigney in 1961. They finished eighth of ten teams with a 70-91 record. They initially played their home games at the old Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, which first opened in 1925. From 1962-1965, they shared Dodger Stadium with the National League club. In 1966, they moved into their own Anaheim Stadium.
2. While in California, which was the first team to appear in a World Series?

Answer: Dodgers

The Dodgers and Giants both moved from New York to California for the 1958 season. After finishing seventh of eight teams in their first season in Los Angeles, the Dodgers found the big time in 1959 and won the World Series against the White Sox.
3. Which California team did Gene Mauch manage?

Answer: Angels

Although winning 1902 games in his managerial career, Mauch was not a successful manager. He also lost 2037 games. He managed the Phillies, Expos, Twins, and Angels over 26 seasons, and could not muster even one league title.
4. Which of these teams had the first player to hit 50+ home runs in a season?

Answer: San Francisco Giants

Mays hit 52 home runs for the Giants in San Francisco in 1965. It was the second time that he hit 50, the first being in 1951 while the team was based in New York. No other California-based team had a player hit 50 season home runs in the entire 20th Century.
5. Which team was the first to win consecutive World Series titles in California?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

The Athletics not only repeated, they three-peated from 1972-1974. They were led by the bats of Reggie Jackson, Joe Rudi, Sal Bando, and Gene Tenace, along with the arms of Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue, and Ken Holtzman.
6. Who was the first Cy Young Award winner of all California Major League teams?

Answer: Don Drysdale - Dodgers

California began winning the Cy Young in 1962, and Don Drysdale was the first to bag one in that year. Koufax followed in 1963 with the Dodgers, then Dean Chance of the Angels in 1964. Koufax won two more in 1965 and 1966 before retiring. The Giants' Mike McCormick won the team's first in 1967. Vida Blue was Oakland's first winner in 1971.
7. Which of these teams while playing in California, had the fewest managers when they closed out the 20th Century?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

This was not close. From 1958 to closing out the century, the Giants went through 12 different managers, while the Dodgers had only four. The Athletics saw 14 beginning in 1968 when they moved to Oakland. The Padres who began their franchise in 1969, went through 13 managers.
8. Which team in California was the first to win 100 games in a season while winning a league pennant?

Answer: Giants

In 1962, the Giants and Dodgers finished the National League season in a tie. They would have a best-of-three game playoff series in which the Giants won. The Giants went 103-62 overall, still reaching 100 wins without the playoffs. They would go on to lose that World Series to the Yankees.
9. Which California team would have the first pitcher that struck out over 350 batters in a season?

Answer: Dodgers

Sandy Koufax set a single season record by fanning 382 in 1965 with the Dodgers. Nolan Ryan would later come out in 1973 with the Angels, and break Koufax's mark by one strikeout.
10. Which team had a Hall of Fame great nicknamed "The Silver Fox"?

Answer: Dodgers

The Silver Fox was centerfielder Duke Snider, who began his career with the Dodgers in Brooklyn in 1947, and made the move to the West Coast with the team in 1958. He left the Dodgers in 1962, but not before hitting four home runs in World Series competition twice. He retired with 407 home runs, and was inducted into the hall in 1980.
