Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player in history, to hit over 700 career home runs?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The Babe hit 714 career home runs, with all but 55 hit in a New York Yankee uniform. Ruth also played with the Boston Red Sox for 6 seasons, and his final year in 1935 with the Boston Braves. His season high was 60 in 1927.
2. Who was the first pitcher to win 500 career games?

Answer: Cy Young

The others listed were not pitchers. Denton True 'Cy' Young, pitched for 22 seasons beginning with the Cleveland Spiders in 1890. He retired in 1911 with the Boston Braves. He won the Triple Crown with the Boston club of the American League in 1901.
3. The Los Angeles Dodgers, were called what in their first season of franchise history?

Answer: Brooklyn Atlantics

The Dodger franchise began in 1884 as the Atlantics. From there, in 1884 they were the Brooklyn Grays. Staying in Brooklyn, it was the Grooms, then the Bridegrooms, then the Superbas, Robins, and finally the Dodgers. The Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958. In 1959, the Los Angeles Dodgers won their first World Series by defeating the Chicago White Sox.
4. Who was the first player to win 2 Rookie of the Year Awards in the AMERICAN LEAGUE?

Answer: None listed

Although all these greats listed, were all National League rookies, and have won the award. However, a player may only win the Rookie of the Year one time in their career.
5. George Brett played his entire career of 21 seasons with what team?

Answer: Kansas City Royals

George was a Royal all the way. From 1973 in his first season, until he retired in 1993, he was in the top 3 of the season MVP voting 4 times. He won the AL MVP in 1980. This 12 time all-star, led the league in batting 3 times, and retired with a .305 batting average.
6. In the 20th century, how many players with the last name starting with a "Z", were inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Answer: 0

A ridiculous question for sure, but there were 62 players in Major League baseball with a name beginning with the letter "Z" in the 20th century. None were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Some deserving of the Hall were Tom Zachary and Don Zimmer.
7. What pitcher led the Arizona Diamondbacks with wins, in the 2002 season?

Answer: Randy Johnson

Schilling was the only other Diamondback listed. Randy won 1 more game than Schilling, with a 24-5 record, and took the Cy Young Award with a Triple Crown experience. It was Johnson's 5th Cy Young Award. In 2002, Johnson was in his 15th season in the Majors.
8. Which of the following teams won the World Series in 1900?

Answer: None listed

None of these teams existed in 1900, and the first World Series was not held until 1903. Boston of the American League defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 games to 3, in the first official World Series of baseball in 1903.
9. I transported the Dodgers from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. I managed the Dodgers for 23 seasons, winning 7 National League pennants, including 4 World Series. My nickname was 'Smokey'. Who am I?

Answer: Walter Alston

None of the others listed, never managed the Dodgers. Alston began his Major League career in 1936 as a player with the St.Louis Cardinals, but only had 1 at-bat in his career, in which he struck out. In 1954 he began his great managerial career. In 1958, he initiated the new Los Angeles Dodgers from Brooklyn.

Unfortunately, Major League baseball did not have the Manager of the Year Award presented until 1983. Alston who retired in 1976, would have won many. He was followed by Dodger manager Tom Lasorda.
10. What player in 2001, had 242 hits in the season, the largest season total in over 70 years?

Answer: Ichiro Suzuki

None of the others played baseball in 2001. An accomplishment for sure, Ichiro with the Mariners, had the highest season total since George Sisler of the St.Louis Browns, who had 246 hits in 1922. Suzuki's efforts in 2001, ranked him 9th all-time for Major League baseball at the time that he did it.
