Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first recorded boxing match in England was organised by the 2nd Duke of Albemarle between his butcher and which member of his household staff?

Answer: Butler

In this instance the butler didn't do it - and the butcher was the clear winner. This match took place in 1681. Boxing has been around as a sport since the ancient Olympic Games at least. It has undergone many changes since then, involving rules, styles and techniques. Because of the danger to a boxer's life this sport poses, it has been under increasing pressure since the 1980s by medical associations in various countries to be completely banned.
2. In the sport of hurdling, you may have noticed that some racers tend to shorten their stride and take several smaller steps before they hurdle. What is the name of this frowned-upon practice?

Answer: Stutter stepping

This undesirable technique in the sport of hurdling tends to slow the runner's speed, leading to a loss of place at the conclusion of the race. A finely honed hurdler has no interruption at all in racing technique and is a joy to see as he or she takes the hurdles with ease, speed and grace.
3. The sport of badminton began in India, halfway through the 18th century, by which group of people?

Answer: British military officers

Badminton was an offshoot of the already known game of shuttlecock. British officers added a net to the game so that players had definite sides of a court from which to play. This began in the town of Poona, and for a time the new sport was also known by that name.

Initially the object that was batted to and from between players was a ball of wool, but it wasn't too long before this was replaced by the shuttlecock. When British officers returned home to England, they took this new game with them.

It quickly caught on in that country and spread from there.
4. Before they begin their contests, sumo wrestlers go through strict procedures that must be adhered to. One of these is the scattering of which substance into the ring?

Answer: Salt

Sumo is a sport in Japan that is centuries old. Apart from the actual match, which sometimes only takes a few seconds to decide, a sumo wrestler must follow certain rituals before beginning the match. Part of this includes facing the audience, clapping his hands, stomping on the floor of the ring to drive away evil spirits, and tossing a handful of salt into the ring to purify it.

A sumo wrestler's daily life away from the ring is equally as regimented.
5. In less official terms, what do ice hockey players usually call an ice hockey puck?

Answer: Biscuit

Nobody knows exactly where the word "puck" originated but it is thought to come from early Irish or Scottish settlers in Canada. They brought the word with them from the game of hurling back in their home countries. The wording for poking the object used in that game was "puc" in Gaelic Scottish or "poc" in the Gaelic Irish.

In a fast playing game of ice hockey, the puck can be very dangerous if an unprotected part of the body is hit by it. In 2002, a member of the audience, sitting in the then unprotected audience section, was hit on the head by one, and died. Since then, protective netting sheets have been installed between the audience and the players in venues where this game is played.
6. In the sport of modern fencing, which is the lightest weapon used?

Answer: Foil

The foil, sabre and épée are the three weapons used in modern fencing. Of these the foil is the lightest. The strict rules of fencing indicate that the foil must only target the front and back torso, the sabre targets all of the body from the waist up, and the épée can target anywhere on the body. The next lightest weapon after the foil is the sabre, and then the épée.
7. In the original game of tennis, which evolved in 12th century France, with what was the ball hit?

Answer: Bare hand

Modern tennis, as we know the game, began in late 19th century England, but the game is its original form was created centuries earlier by the French. The original game, which is still played by tennis die-hards, takes place on a hard enclosed court which is wider and longer than a modern tennis court.

It has slightly different scoring rules, is played with differently shaped racquets, and is usually played with a ball made from cork. This game is referred to as real tennis. The modern English based game is simply referred to as tennis or lawn tennis.
8. In synchronised diving, most of the divers do identical dives together. Occasionally, however, competitors do dives that are opposite to each other. What is this form of dive called?

Answer: Pinwheel

The dive is still judged on its synchronicity from the moment of take off, position during descent, and entry. Divers must turn in mirror images of each other, take off together, do rotations and twists at the same time, and land in the water together as precisely as possible.
9. Which non-weight bearing sport, of the following choices, is excellent for exercising all the major muscle groups in the human body?

Answer: Rowing

The sport of rowing has been recorded as far back as ancient Egypt. Modern rowing has several different categories in which to compete, and an incredibly detailed set of training steps to be perfected in order to achieve the optimum stroke. Because it is a non weight bearing sport, and if correct posture is adhered to, injuries in this sport are usually kept to the minimum apart from strain on knee joints.

It exercises the triceps, biceps, quadriceps, latissimus dorsi, gluteal and abdominal muscles, and is an excellent sport for improving heart health.
10. In the cross-country category in the equestrian sport of eventing, is it true that the lowest score reflects the best result?

Answer: Yes

This sport is absolutely wonderful to watch. It requires years of dedication and training, and a special bond between horse and rider, before a champion can be produced. The rules of the event are manifold, with penalty points awarded for failing to meet their demands. An optimum time score is set for the course, and for each second over that time it takes a rider and horse to complete, another penalty point is awarded.
