Frank Shamrock retired and vacated his UFC Middleweight Championship (199 lb). This division was then renamed the Light Heavyweight division and a new title created.

The weight class limits were changed in 2001, and Miletich became champion of the newly formed Welterweight division.

Lesnar came back from this defeat earning the number one contender position for the UFC Heavyweight Championship, which Lesnar won by defeating Couture at UFC 91 on November 15, 2008 by TKO.
