Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I began my career as a Montreal Expo in 1988.

Answer: Randy Johnson

Randy only played for a little more than one season in Montreal, before being traded to Seattle midseason of 1989. He would stay in Mariner country until midseason 1998, where he would go to the Astros, finish the season, then move to Arizona. Johnson won one Cy Young Award with the Mariners, then four with the Diamondbacks, including the Triple Crown in 2002.
2. I once held the season strikeout record for striking out 382 batters.

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Koufax of the Dodgers set this seemingly unbreakable mark in 1965, until Nolan Ryan broke this record with his last batter of the 1973 season as a California Angel.
3. Of these four pitching greats, who was the only one to win 25 games in a season?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Not only was Koufax the only one of the four to reach 25 wins in a season, but he did it three times. In 1963, Sandy went 25-5 for his first Cy Young Award. Then he earned consecutive Cy Young's in 1965 and 1966, going 26-8 and 27-9 respectively. 1966, Koufax's last year in the Majors, also earned him the Triple Crown Award.
4. Which of these greats won more season strikeout crowns?

Answer: Randy Johnson

Actually this was not close. Randy Johnson won his 10th in 2004, while Clemens won five, Koufax won four, and Martinez won three.
5. I began my career in Los Angeles as a Dodger in 1992, and pitched in only two games in my first season.

Answer: Pedro Martinez

Pedro began his career in 1992 in a Dodger uniform in Los Angeles. He pitched a total of eight innings in his first season. In 1993, Pedro was 10-5 before being traded to Montreal for 1994. Koufax was a Dodger, but began his Dodger career in Brooklyn in 1955, before the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1958.
6. Which of these greats won the Triple Crown Award twice?

Answer: Roger Clemens

Clemens won his two Triple Crown Awards in consecutive seasons, 1997 and 1998. This also earned him consecutive Cy Young Awards. 1998 was his last season as a Blue Jay, as he changed into the pinstripes in Yankee Stadium for 1999. Sandy Koufax of the Dodgers won three in his career, and Randy Johnson won one along with Pedro Martinez.
7. Which of these pitching greats was the tallest?

Answer: Randy Johnson

Nicknamed "Big Unit", Major League Baseball officially marked Johnson at 6'10", and has gone into their record books for this height. Compared to the others, Johnson towered over them. Clemens came in second with this one, officially listed at 6'4", then Koufax at 6'2", then Martinez at only 5'11".
8. Who began their Major League career as a 25 year old rookie?

Answer: Randy Johnson

Born in 1963, Johnson debuted when he was 25 years and five days old in 1988 as a Montreal Expo. Clemens was 21 when he debuted with the Red Sox, Martinez was 20 as a Dodger, and Koufax only 19 as a Dodger.
9. Which of these four greats was born outside the 50 United States?

Answer: Pedro Martinez

Martinez was born, Pedro Jaime Martinez, in 1971 in Manoguayabo, Dominican Republic. Koufax was born Sanford Braun, in Brooklyn, New York, while William Roger Clemens was born in Dayton, Ohio. Randall David Johnson was born in Walnut Creek, California, in 1963.
10. Which of these greats played for only one franchise?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

The others each played for at least three teams. Koufax was a rookie in 1955 as a Brooklyn Dodger, then made the move to Los Angeles in 1958. He retired still as a Dodger in 1966 after only 12 seasons.
