1. Which of the following clubs did Phil Niekro never become a member of?

Answer: The Triple Crown Pitching Club

Phil retired after 24 seasons in 1987 with a 318-274 record. He won 20+ games in a season three times in his career, along with his 3342 strikeouts. Phil was a 1997 Hall of Fame inductee.
2. Dodger Sandy Koufax never gained membership to which club?

Answer: The 300-Win Club

Koufax had six fantastic seasons from 1961-1966, then retired due to elbow problems. He played for 12 seasons with the Dodgers, winning three Cy Youngs, a season MVP, two World Series MVPs, and three pitching Triple Crowns. He pitched four no-hitters including one perfect game in 1965.

He set a record for striking out 382 batters in 1965, a record which Nolan Ryan later broke in 1973. He retired with a 165-87 record.

Ryan retired after playing with the Mets, Angels, Astros, and Rangers with a 324-292 record. Nolan was the first pitcher in history to strike out 4000 batters, and closed the books with 5714. He also set a record in 1973 for striking out 383 batters in a season with the Angels. Amazingly, Ryan never won a Cy Young, and was the runner-up to Baltimore's Jim Palmer in 1973.

On May 8, 1968, Hunter threw a perfecto against the Minnesota Twins. He retired with 224 wins, 2012 strikeouts, and hit only 49 batters. He won his Cy Young award in 1974 with the Athletics. He also appeared in exactly 500 games, starting 476 of them.

Bob played his entire career as a Cardinal from 1959-1975. He won two Cy Young awards in 1968 and 1970, and complimented his 1968 season with the MVP. He threw a no-hitter against the Pirates on August 14, 1971, in a 11-0 blowout. He peaked in 1970 with his season strikeouts with 274.
8. Steve Carlton was a great pitcher, and was rewarded with his Hall of Fame induction in 1994. However, with all his accomplishments on the diamond, which club eluded him?

Answer: The Season MVP Club

From 1965-1988, Steve played his first seven seasons as a Cardinal before wearing the Phillies uniform. In his 15th season in Philadelphia, he was traded to the Giants then White Sox. Carlton retired in 1988 as a Minnesota Twin with his 329-244 record, with his four Cy Youngs, one Triple Crown, and the 1972 season where he struck out 310 batters which was a part of his 4136 career strikeouts. Steve never finished a season closer than fifth in the MVP balloting.

The great Cy Young spent 22 seasons in baseball. He threw a perfect game on May 5, 1904, against the Athletics while pitching for the Boston Americans of the AL. He retired with 511 career wins, and had walked 1217. Young struck out a career 2803 batters.
10. Fernando Valenzuela, who began Dodger mania in 1981, had a few accomplishments in his career, but never became a member of which club?

Fernando won both the Cy and the rookie award in the 1981 season. He won his only Gold Glove in 1986. Valenzuela spent 11 of his 17 seasons with the Dodgers, and another four on the west coast. He retired with a 173-153 record with his strikeout season high of 242.
