Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pitcher Steve Carlton won four Cy Young Awards and also pitched for a Triple Crown. Which of these teams did Steve never play for?

Answer: San Diego Padres

Steve spent most of his 24 seasons with the Cardinals and Phillies. He retired as a Minnesota Twin in 1988. Carlton also played for the Giants, White Sox, and Indians. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1994 with a 329-244 career record.
2. Pitching great Roger Clemens won seven Cy Young awards, threw two Triple Crowns, and won an MVP in his career. Which team never shared his endeavors?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

Roger began his career playing in 13 seasons with the Boston Red Sox also. When he walked away from baseball in 2007, he was third in all-time strikeouts with 4672 behind Randy Johnson and the great Nolan Ryan. Clemens had a career record of 354-184.
3. The immortal career of the great Babe Ruth saw him play with three different teams in his Major League career. Which of the following was not one of them?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The Babe began his career with the Red Sox in 1914, then became the icon with the Yankees in 1920, and retired after one season with the Boston Braves in 1935. Ruth hit 714 home runs in his career, set many records, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in its first round of inductions in 1936. Ruth died in 1948 at the age of 53.
4. Hall of Fame hopeful Pete Rose retired with the most hits in baseball history in 1986 after 24 seasons. Which of the following teams did he not play for?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Pete played most of his career with the Reds, five with the Phillies, and one with the Expos. He retired with 4256 career hits, breaking the great Ty Cobb's record. Rose was the 1963 NL Rookie of the Year and the 1973 NL MVP.
5. Jose Canseco began his career with the Oakland Athletics, and what a one-two punch with him and Mark McGwire. Jose won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1986, then McGwire in 1987. Which of these teams did Jose never play for?

Answer: San Francisco Giants

In Jose's eighth season in 1992, he was traded by Oakland to the Rangers where he spent two seasons. He also played with the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Devil Rays, Yankees, and then retired with the White Sox in 2001. Canseco hit 462 home runs in 17 seasons.
6. A tremendous person and player, this 1992 Hall of Fame inductee was Tom Seaver. Amongst his three Cy Young awards, Seaver also was a NL Rookie of the Year with the Mets. Which team would never benefit by Tom's arm?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

Tom would play in 11 seasons wearing the Mets uniform and another six with the Reds. For three seasons he would wear the White Sox uniform, then retired with the Boston Red Sox in 1986 after 16 games with them.
7. In 25 seasons, Rickey Henderson kept his bags packed most of the time as he played with nine teams, and made 13 moves in his career. He was a true thief, and retired with the most stolen bases in baseball history. Which of the following teams did Rickey never play for?

Answer: Minnesota Twins

Rickey played for (in order) the Athletics, Yankees, Athletics, Blue Jays, Athletics, Padres, Angels, Athletics, Mets, Mariners, Padres, Red Sox, and finally retired as a Dodger in 2003. His frequent flyer miles would have set him up for life, but he was still a thief in baseball.

He set an almost unreachable record of stealing 130 bases in 1982, and career thefts of 1406 when he retired was almost 500 more than the runner-up Lou Brock, who never reached the 1000-mark.
8. Hall of Fame pitcher Cy Young, who a pitching award was named after, won an amazing 511 games in his career. Which of the following team uniforms did he never wear?

Answer: Providence Grays

The Providence Grays of the early National League era was a great franchise. The team included the great Charley Radbourn who went 59-12 in 1884, but the franchise folded after the 1885 season. Young began his career with the Spiders of the National League in 1890.

He then went to the St. Louis Perfectos of the NL for two seasons. When Major League Baseball began in 1901, he was in a Boston American uniform, where he found his only World Series appearance in 1903. The Boston club took on the name "Red Sox" in 1908, where Cy went 21-11 in the season.

He played in three seasons with the Indians, then appeared in 11 games with the Braves of the Natioinal League before retiring in 1911. His 511-316 career record would be an amazing feat to break, but not likely with relievers, set-up pitchers, and closers. Young was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1937, in the second year of inductions.
9. There was a player named Roger Maris who finally broke Babe Ruth's season record of hitting 60 home runs in a season. This happened in 1961 after the Babe set his record in 1927. Maris was a two-time MVP in his own time, and retired in 1968. Which team did Maris never play for?

Answer: Detroit Tigers

Roger started his career as an Indian in 1957, then found himself in an Athletics uniform in 1958. 1960 saw him in the pinstripes, and he won the AL MVP Award. He won it again in 1961, leaving teammate Mickey Mantle as the runner-up MVP in both seasons.

There was controversy as Roger hit 61 home runs in a 162-game season, the first time the Major Leagues went to this format. Ruth hit his 60 in a 152-game season. Maris retired as a Cardinal in 1968 with 275 career home runs.
10. Boston Red Sox slugger Fred Lynn was the first player in history to win the Rookie of the Year and MVP Award in the same season in 1975. Which team did Lynn not play for in his career?

Answer: Giants

In addition to the Red Sox, Lynn played four seasons with the Angels, four with the Orioles, and two with the Tigers. He retired in 1990 as a Padre. His rookie award was won over teammate Jim Rice, and his MVP award was won over John Mayberry of the Royals.
