Jairzinho arranged the transfer of Ronaldo from lowly ranked Sao Cristavao to Cruzeiro. Tostao became a doctor and later a media analyst. Gerson became Secretary of Sport in the local government at Niteroi and captain Carlos Alberto ran a soccer school in Rio.

An incredible 4.14 goals per game were scored in the Guanajuato Stadium in Leon. Jalisco in Guadalajara averaged 3.25, the Azteca in Mexico City 2.8 and the Luis Dorsal in Toluca 2 goals per game.

Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton were in the Green Fire jewelry shop in the Tequenmada Hotel in Bogota looking for a present for Chalton's wife. Moore was falsely accused of placing a bracelet in his pocket - impossible as the shop assistant later testified that he was wearing his England tracksuit at the time which had no pockets! Moore was eventually released but the case was not closed until 1975.

Answer: Israel, El Salvador and Morocco

Morocco became the first African country to come through actual qualifying rounds. Egypt qualified in 1934 automatically without playing. El Salvador won the qualifying spot normally claimed by Mexico, the hosts. Israel became the first of a number of countires to eliminate Australia at the final hurdle.

Although FIFA had earlier announced the draw for the finals tournament would be seeded, the four pots were determined by geography.

Answer: Javier Guzman

Mexico was leading Italy 1-0 in the quarter final before the unfortunate Guzman scored the only own goal of the tournament. Italy went on to win the game 4-1 and eventually make the final.
