Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which year did the franchise take on the name "Yankees"?

Answer: 1913

The franchise began as the Baltimore Orioles in 1901. They were the New York Highlanders from 1903-1912, then took on the historical Yankee name in 1913.
2. The Yankees purchased the contract of Babe Ruth on January 3, 1920, from Howard Frazee and his Boston Red Sox. How many more wins did the Yankees have with Ruth in the 1920 season, compared to the Ruth-less Yankees of 1919?

Answer: 15

In 1919, the Yankees finished 80-59 for a third place finish (played in 141 games). In 1920, even with Ruth's 54 home runs, they went 95-59 and still finished third in the 154-game season.
3. In which year did George Steinbrenner buy the Yankees?

Answer: 1973

Steinbrenner bought the franchise from CBS in 1973, who had owned the club for nine years. CBS purchased the team earlier from Dan Topping and Del Webb in 1964. After turning over the reins of the franchise to his sons, George died on July 13, 2010.
4. In 1927, Babe Ruth hit his monstrous 60 home runs in the season, more than any single team total. Lou Gehrig, the other half of the Yankees one-two punch was over-shadowed greatly. How many home runs did he hit in the season?

Answer: 47

With Ruth's 60 and Gehrig's 47, the Yankees blasted out 158 team home runs in the season, setting a new record. It is hard to imagine that with Ruth hitting more home runs than any other AL team, Gehrig hit more than four teams by himself also. The two combined for an amazing 117 home runs.

The team home run totals in the season were; 1)Yankees 158, 2)Athletics 56, 3)Browns 55, 4)Tigers 51, 5)White Sox 36, 6)Senators 29, 7)Red Sox 28, 8)Indians 26.
5. A batter hitting for the cycle in one game is a rare feat. Which of these Yankees did it three different times in his career?

Answer: Bob Meusel

Meusel was part of the Bronx Bombers in the 1920s. Over-shadowed by the Babe and Lou Gehrig, Meusel hit for the cycle in 1921, 1922, and 1928. Bob led the league in home runs in 1925 with 33. His final season was as a Cincinnati Reds outfielder in 1930.
6. Playing in the pinstripes, which of these Yankee catchers had the highest career batting average?

Answer: Bill Dickey

Dickey was a Yankee from 1928-1946. He led all Yankee catchers with his .313 career average. Of the four, Munson was the Yankee runner-up with his .292 average.
7. The Yankees bagged their first World Series crown in 1923 against the Giants, four games to two. Which Giant player's home runs resulted in both losses to the Yankees in that series?

Answer: Casey Stengel

The others never played for the Giants, and didn't begin their big league careers for at least another 20 years. The outfielder Stengel created havoc on the Yankees. In game one in the ninth inning, Casey's home run was the difference in the Giants' 5-4 win.

In game three, Stengel scored the game's only run with his home run in the seventh inning. He batted .417 in the series. However, the Yankees would go on to win the series, four games to two.
8. From 1936-1939, the Yankees were the first team in history to win four consecutive World Series. In those four series, which team did they defeat twice?

Answer: New York Giants

The Yankees took the Giants down four games to two in 1936, then four games to one in 1937. The Cubs were next in 1938, losing four games to none, and the Reds saw the same result in 1939.
9. Which of the following Yankee managers took the team to more season wins in their career?

Answer: Joe McCarthy

This wasn't close with McCarthy winning around 300 more games than the others, retiring with 1460 Yankee wins. He managed the Yankees from 1931-1946, giving him an average of 91 wins per season. He also managed the Cubs in the 1920s before the Yankees with a season average of 88 wins per season. McCarthy averaged 74 wins per season with the Red Sox from 1948-1950.
10. Who was the first Yankee to win two American League MVP awards?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

In the early days of baseball, players were restricted to winning only one MVP Award. Ruth won his in 1923. In his 1927 season when he slammed 60 home runs, Lou Gehrig was presented the award because Ruth had already won it. The rules were later relaxed, and Gehrig won another one in 1936, one season after the Babe's retirement.
