Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. France '98: This French midfielder stomped on the Saudi Arabian captain's ankle, leading to a two-match ban. He came back in the final to score two goals.

Answer: Zinedine Zidane

Zidane was having an amazing game (as usual) before he decided to lose it. Japan/Korea '02 was Zidane's second Final.
2. Italia '90: Which Dutch defender/midfielder spat repeatedly at Germany's Rudi Voller?

Answer: Frank Rijkaard

Rijkaard fouled Voller then Rudi returned with some trash talk, so Rijkaard let one fly. Moments later, Voller went in hard against the Dutch keeper, which led to something of a brawl. Voller and Rijkaard were both red-carded. Walking into the dressing rooms, Rijkaard let loose one more gobber at Rudi. He must have been happy for the early shower.
3. USA '94: This Bolivian player, injured just before the Finals, was substituted in against Germany. Four minutes later, a challenge from behind on a German player resulted in a red card.

Answer: Marco Etcheverry

Etcheverry received a two match ban for his efforts. Since Bolivia went out in the group stage, Etcheverry's World Cup career lasted all of four minutes.
4. USA '94: This Irish striker, while waiting to enter the match as a substitute, questioned the parentage of the official during a loss to Mexico.

Answer: John Aldridge

Since this happened on the sidelines, cameras and microphones easily picked it up. After making it onto the field, Aldridge continued shouting at the fourth official. He took enough time out from yelling to score a consolation goal.
5. France '98: Hero of Japan/Korea '02, this Brazilian forward had some sort of mental breakdown hours before the final against France.

Answer: Ronaldo

Conspiracy theories ranged from poisoning to problems in his lovelife. He managed to start the game but didn't make a difference. Ronaldo took his revenge in Japan/Korea, taking Brazil to their 5th championship and earning the golden boot.
6. Mexico '86: This midfielder became the first English player to be sent off in the Finals for launching the ball at the referee.

Answer: Ray Wilkins

Wilkins had been carded earlier in the game so he immediately saw red after this ridiculous act.
7. USA '94: This German midfielder thought it best to make obscene gestures at his own fans.

Answer: Stefan Effenberg

After being substituted against South Korea, Effenberg gestured to the German fans. Coach Berti Vogts didn't think it was funny and sent him home. Effenberg didn't play for Germany again for 4 years.
8. France '98: This English player was red carded for a retaliatory foul against Argentinian Diego Simeone.

Answer: David Beckham

Another part of the England-Argentina rivalry. Poster-boy Beckham became one of the most hated men in Britain for a while as England crashed out of the World Cup. He had his revenge though in Japan. Against Argentina, Beckham's penalty was the only goal scored, and Argentina never made it past the group stage.
9. Spain '82: This West Germany keeper tried to remove French defender Patrick Battiston's head with his elbow, resulting in one of the most brutal World Cup tackles.

Answer: Harald Schumacher

When told that the Frenchman had lost some teeth as a result of the tackle, Schumacher replied "If it's only the teeth, tell him I'll pay his dentist". Some time later, Schumacher revealed a drug scandal in German football and never played for his country again.
10. USA '94: After scoring against Greece in their first game, this Argentinian legend went crazy in front of a sideline camera. He was found guilty of drug abuse before Argentina's next game.

Answer: Diego Maradona

Possessor of the 'Hand of God', Maradona is unquestionably one of the World Cup greats. Unfortunately, fame and fortune took over and he took no further part in his fourth Finals.
