Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which franchise was the first to play in eight Super Bowls?

Answer: Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys appeared in their 8th Super Bowl in 1995 (winning five). The Steelers appeared in their 8th in 2010 (winning six). New England appeared in their 8th in 2014 (winning four).
2. Each of these players was a Super Bowl MVP, except for who?

Answer: Walter Payton

Unfortunately, head coach Mike Ditka decided to use the great Walter Payton primarily as a decoy. The Hall of Fame running back never even scored a touchdown in the biggest game of his career.
3. Each of these Super Bowls resulted in a thrilling last minute finish, except for which one?

Answer: Super Bowl VIII - Dolphins vs. Vikings

Don Shula's Dolphins completely dominated a hapless Vikings game in 1974, in what was largely considered the most boring Super Bowl ever played. MVP Larry Csonka and the Miami running game just couldn't be stopped as Shula brilliantly designed schemes to take advantage of Minnesota's aggressive defensive line.

The rushing attack was so effective, that quarterback Bob Griese threw a mere seven passes the entire game, setting a Super Bowl record.
4. Which of these starting Super Bowl running backs was actually traded to a different team during that season's training camp. Then remarkably, this disgruntled running back was forced to return to his original team after the NFL commissioner nullified the trade?

Answer: 1971 - Duane Thomas

Duane Thomas was a strange fellow who seemed to always attract controversy with his scathing demeanor. At the beginning of the season that finally won a championship for Dallas, Thomas was traded to the Patriots, who also grew tired of his attitude. Commissioner Pete Rozelle, in a stunning move, "forced" the Cowboys to retract their original trade. Thomas would eventually become a key element in the Cowboys' first Super Bowl victory.
5. During the NFLs 75th anniversary celebration, one Super Bowl's offensive line was considered to be the best squad to have played in football's biggest game. Which franchise's offensive line made the "All Super Bowl" team?

Answer: 1976 Oakland Raiders

The combination of John Vella, George Beuhler, Dave Dalby, and Hall of Famers Gene Upshaw and Art Shell, was named the best offensive lineman unit to have graced the Super Bowl stage. The line's performance in Superbowl XI was so dominant over the Vikings, that Art Shell didn't allow the great Viking defensive end Jim Marshall to make a single tackle the entire game.
6. Which Super Bowl teams were the winners in both seasons that were cut short by a player's strike?

Answer: '82 Redskins and '87 Redskins

The Redskins wouldn't win a Super Bowl from a complete NFL season until their victory in 1991.
7. Which of these defensive players was never named Super Bowl MVP?

Answer: Joe Greene - Pittsburgh Steelers

While the Steel Curtain was arguably one of the best defenses in NFL history, no Steeler defensive player was ever a Super Bowl MVP in the first forty.
8. Which was the first Super Bowl decided by a single point?

Answer: Superbowl XXV - Giants vs. Bills

Super Bowl XXV was considered by many one of the most trilling finishes in the game's history. The Bills, playing in their first world championship, were ready to seal the game with a last-second Scott Norwood field goal. What followed is perhaps one of the most tragic "wide right" misses in the game's history. With no time left, Norwood's miss saved a New York 1-point lead and the win.
January 27th, 1991 -- 20-19 -- New York Giants vs. Buffalo Bills.
9. Which Super Bowl losing team was the first to finish the game without a touchdown?

Answer: 1971 Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins were a victim of a very game Dallas Cowboy defense led by Bob Lilly. The "No Name" gang stifled the Dolphins in a 24-3 rout.
10. Which Super Bowl defense was the first to score a safety in the big game?

Answer: 1974 Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers were the first, sacking a panicked Fran Tarkenton to grab the first 2-0 lead in Super Bowl history.
