Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. CR Belouizdad; MC Oran; JS Kabylie

Answer: Algeria

With leading teams participating in Ligue Professionnelle 1, the sport of football is a popular one in the nation of Algeria. Overseen by the Algerian Football Federation (AFF), it's been a formal sporting venture in the country since the 1960s and many of its oldest teams hail from those first years. CR Belouizdad, MC Oran, and JS Kabylie all have illustrious histories spanning decades of play on the fields. Though CR Belouizdad is one of Algiers' premier teams and one of the most celebrated winners of the Algerian Cup, JS Kabylie, who make their home in Tizi Ouzou, more famously lead the championship for Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1.
2. SC Villa; Express FC; Vipers SC

Answer: Uganda

While the Ugandan National Football Team, 'The Cranes', are the crown jewel of this African nation's football roster, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (or FUFA) has overseen the country's leagues since the 1920s. The Uganda Premier League, however, started in 1968 and sees sixteen teams per season rise to the top of the pile.

Sports Club Villa, Express Football Club, and Vipers Sports Club are amongst the most celebrated of the nation's teams with the latter two being based in the nation's capital, Kampala, and SC Villa hailing from Bweyogerere where they, along with The Cranes, train at Mandela National Stadium, one of Uganda's largest venues.
3. Clube Nacional de Benguela; Atlético Sport Aviação; C.D. Primeiro de Agosto

Answer: Angola

Angola qualified for their first-ever World Cup finals tournament in 2006. The nation is passionate about football, watching its top teams in a league known as the Girabola. Comprised of sixteen teams, this division was founded in the late 1970s though its teams and players predated Angolan independence in 1975 (starting their leagues in 1941 and some teams, like Clube Nacional de Benguela, starting as far back as 1920).

Though one would expect a team with a name like Clube Desportivo Primeiro de Agosto to top out the division quite regularly Atlético Petróleos de Luanda emerged out of the 1980s to become the nation's top winners. Both have been based in Luanda, the nation's capital.
4. Club Africain; Étoile Sportive du Sahel; CS Sfaxien

Answer: Tunisia

Tunisia's top sport, football holds a special place in the list of the nation's activities. Of particular note, Tunisia's national football team is a frequent qualifier for the FIFA World Cup, appearing amongst the roster as far back as 1978. On home turf, Tunisia's teams top out at Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1, the national championship, though they also compete in the Tunisian Cup (or the President's Cup).

The teams listed in the question are amongst the most awarded in the nation though none, historically, have held a candle to Espérance Sportive de Tunis, based in Tunisia's capital, in terms of continental competitive presence.
5. Coton Sport FC de Garoua; Oryx Douala; Canon Yaoundé

Answer: Cameroon

Repeated FIFA World Cup contenders, Cameroon's national team reached the quarterfinals in 1990, losing to England but hitting a new high watermark by becoming the first African team to reach the quarterfinals. On a national level, Cameroon's players battle it out annually for the Cameroonian Cup with the top twenty-five teams in the nation reaching the Championnat du Cameroun de football, also known as Elite One division. Though some of these teams started as far back as 1941, the country's independence from France and the UK led to the creation of the Cameroonian Football Federation in 1959. Coton Sport FC de Garoua, perhaps the most celebrated of these teams, was founded later on, in 1986.
6. Yanga; Simba S.C., Maji Maji F.C.

Answer: Tanzania

If you're looking for the top tier of football playing in Tanzania, then you're looking toward the Ligi Kuu Tanzania Bara, the Tanzanian Premier League, which sits at the top of the pyramid in terms of professional play. While Tanzania isn't, historically, a nation that rolls around to the FIFA World Cup or similar high-profile events in Africa, the league, established in the mid-1960s, has brought forth the top players in the country, most of which end up on Yanga (Young Africans Sports Club) or Simba S.C., both of which were founded thirty years before the league (back in the 1930s).
7. Saint George S.C.; Defence Force S.C.; Cotton FC

Answer: Ethiopia

Popularized by those in the country during Italian occupancy before and during the Second World War, football remained as a major pastime in Ethiopia before being led and moderated by the Ethiopian Football Federation in 1943. The Ethiopian Premier League was established soon after, allowing sixteen top clubs to vie for the Ethiopian Cup on an annual basis. By and large, this competition has been led reliably by Saint George S.C. since it was formed (in opposition to Fascist Italy in its early days) though it has seen significant competition from both Defence Force S.C. (or Mekelakeya) and Cotton FC.
8. Royal Leopards; Green Mamba; Eleven Men in Flight

Answer: Eswatini

The Eswatini Football Association may have been established in 1968, but it started out as the National Football Association of Swaziland when it was first founded. This, of course, switched over when the nation changed its name in 2018. It took with it a sponsored Premier League and the Swazi Cup, fought for by the sixteen top teams in the nation.

The Royal Leopards, Green Mamba, and Eleven Men in Flight are some of the more unique names to arise from the league and all have won multiple Swazi Cups.
9. Steve Biko FC; Wallidan FC; Samger FC

Answer: The Gambia

While The Gambia isn't the largest African nation it has had a growing football community for decades since the establishment of the GFA League First Division. The league is similarly small, and many of the teams practice in the same spaces (the vast majority in the capital city, Banjul).

This said, two of the options given in the question are explicitly not Banjul teams-- Steve Biko FC is from Bakau; Samger is from Kanifing. Wallidan FC is one of the most successful teams in the league along with Real de Banjul FC, and both hail from the capital.
10. Al-Merrikh SC; Al-Hilal Club; Al Ahli SC

Answer: Sudan

The Sudan Premier League, created in 1965, at one time covered a much larger area of football players, but with the separation of South Sudan in the early 2010s, Sudan's teams pulled back slightly. Nonetheless, many of them are significant in terms of African footballers. Perhaps the nation's most venerated team, the Al-Merrikh Sporting Club, was formed in 1908, and it's one of the oldest football teams on the continent.

Its strongest opponent, at least in its first century, was Al-Hilal Club; both are from Omdurman and both are generally the finalists for the Sudan Cup. Al Ahli SC, the odd one out here, is from the nation's capital, Khartoum.
