Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Irish scored eight tries against Italy on Saint Patrick's day. Who did not score a try for Ireland in the first half?

Answer: Ronan O'Gara

All the named players scored tries in the match (Girvan Dempsey scored two - one in each half), but Ronan O'Gara's did not come until the second half, and the others were scored also in the second half by Dennis Hickie (2) and Shane Horgan.
2. What did Brian O'Driscoll suffer, causing him to be substituted 60 minutes into the game against Italy?

Answer: Injured hamstring

He apparently tore his hamstring badly and would need a long layoff.
3. Ramiro Pez kicked all 12 of Italy's points in the first half. What did he do in the second half?

Answer: Nothing, he was substituted

Pez had been considered a surprise choice ahead of Andrea Scanavacca, who replaced him in the second half.
4. Who did not score for Italy in the second half against Ireland?

Answer: Mauro Bergamasco

Mauro Bergamasco was not playing, having been cited for a punch in the game against Wales and under a four week ban.
5. Who scored the final points in the Italy-Ireland game?

Answer: Andrea Scanavacca - Italy

Scanavacca converted de Marigny's try to leave Ireland waiting to see what happened in Paris.
6. Prior to the match against Scotland, had France won the Six Nations Championship already.

Answer: No

France knew that to go into the lead in the Six Nations, they would have to beat Scotland by at least 24 points, but they would then have to wait to see what happened in Wales. Many people considered this to be unfair, and thought these matches should have been played simultaneously, but the television coverage was paramount.
7. France scored six tries against Scotland. Who of these did not score?

Answer: Damien Traille

Damien Traille did not come on (replacing Denis Poitrenard) until 6 minutes before time and did not get a chance to score.
8. Sean Lamont had a mixed game against France, scoring a try and being sent to the sin bin. What was unusual in these two events?

Answer: He was sent off in mistake for his brother Rory

For some reason, the referee sent Sean off for a late tackle committed by Rory. Sean has bleached blonde hair and was wearing bright orange gloves, so it was a strange mistake to make.
9. Prior to the France match, Scotland captain Chris Paterson had kicked 20 successful spot kicks. What happened in the second minute of this match?

Answer: He missed a very straightforward penalty

He missed an extremely simple kick just after the BBC match commentator was enthused about his record.
10. What was the first name of the Frenchman who scored the try (according to the Third Match Official) in the last seconds of the game?

Answer: Elvis

Elvis Vermeleulen. It was impossible for the referee to see whether the ball had been grounded, so he consulted the TMO, ironically an Irishman, for the decision.
11. Prior to the kickoff, how many points did England need to beat Wales by to win the Six Nations?

Answer: 57

England started the match knowing that victory by 57 points would win them an unlikely championship.
12. Who scored a 'full house' (Try, conversion, penalty and drop goal) in the Wales-England match?

Answer: James Hook - Wales

Although Toby Flood scored a conversion, a penalty and a drop goal for England, on this occasion James Hook won the battle of the fly-halfs.
13. Who captained Wales in the match against England?

Answer: Gareth Thomas

Gareth Thomas took the captain's armband after Stephen Jones was discovered to have a broken wrist. James Hook, at a mere 22 years old, may well be a future Welsh captain. Tom Rees, despite his Welsh surname, played for England.
14. Why was Chris Horsman, who scored a try against England, known as 'The Lance Armstrong of Rugby'?

Answer: He had beaten cancer twice

Testicular cancer was followed by stomach cancer.
15. What were the final positions of the teams in the Six Nations, starting from the champions and working down?

Answer: France, Ireland, England, Italy, Wales, Scotland

France won the championship for the third time in four years. Ireland won the Triple Crown for the third time in four years. England won the Calcutta Cup. Italy won away for the first time and back-to-back matches for the first time. Wales beat England (always their favourite victory). And Scotland? Well, they won the Wooden Spoon.
