Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The second UFC show welcomed back defending champion Royce Gracie to the Octagon, but which other fighter from UFC 1 returned to compete in the second tournament?

Answer: Patrick Smith

Pat Smith lost to Ken Shamrock in the first round of UFC 1, but his performance in the fight meant that he got an invite to the second tournament. Shamrock himself was invited to take part in UFC 2 as well, but could not compete due to a broken hand.
2. UFC 2 provided the debut showing for many fighters, but which long-time UFC notary made his first appearance at this show?

Answer: John McCarthy

"Big" John McCarthy made his first UFC appearance here, and refereed all the fights during the event. McCarthy would go on to be a referee at nearly every UFC event until December 2007, and is famous for his "Let's Get It On!" proclamation to start the fight.
3. UFC 2 held the first, and so far last one-night 16-man tournament. The first round of matches saw eight fighters win to move on to the quarter finals, however the first seven fights were not broadcast on the live show. Which fighter won his first round match, but was forced to withdraw due to injury?

Answer: Frank Hamaker

Hamaker defeated Luster by TKO when Luster's corner threw in the towel. However, Hamaker claimed an injury and withdrew from the tournament, although speculation suggested the injury was a fabrication as he didn't want another fight. Fred Ettish replaced Luster, but failed to make it any further in the competition.
4. Who did Patrick Smith defeat in the second round in just 30 seconds?

Answer: Scott Morris

In a short, brutal fight, Morris took Smith down but it ended up with Smith on top in a mount position. Smith then delivered a series of devastating punches and elbows. The fight ended only because Smith stopped hitting him. McCarthy didn't have the power to end a fight as a referee, and Morris' corner stated beforehand he would never throw in the towel and looked away from McCarthy when Big John motioned to him. With Morris all but unconscious and not in a state to submit, Smith simply got up and walked away, which ended the fight. Morris was left spitting up blood as he was helped backstage.
5. Royce Gracie continued his winning ways from UFC 1 by defeating Minoki Ichibara in the first round, before going on to defeat whom in the second round?

Answer: Jason DeLucia

Delucia had actually trained with the Gracie family in the past and Royce had went on record as saying that he looked forward to this fight more than any of the others. It only lasted 67 seconds though as Delucia was trapped in a standing armbar and had option but to submit.
6. Remco Pardoel battled Orlando Weit in a second round match pitting two European fighters against each other. Which of the two advanced to the semi-finals?

Answer: Remco Pardoel

Pardoel was one of the first Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners to compete in the UFC after the success of Royce Gracie in UFC 1, and he proved his credentials with successive wins over Alberta Cerra Leon and Orlando Weit.
7. Completing the semi-finals was Johnny Rhodes, an American karate fighter whose only MMA experience came at UFC 2. He defeated his second round opponent in what fashion to move forward in the tournament?

Answer: Submission

Despite his karate background Rhodes officially won the fight by a side choke submission. However, the main action involved Rhodes using punches and knees to open up a huge cut above Ettish's eye, and Rhodes continued pummeling him before eventually sinking in a chokehold. Ettish would go on to become a martial arts coach associated with Pat Miletich, before having his second fight 15 years later in August 2009.

At the age of 54 Ettish won the fight by TKO.
8. The first semi-final saw Patrick Smith take on Johnny Rhodes in a match that only lasted 67 seconds. Smith got the win via submission, but which hold did he use to advance to the final?

Answer: Guillotine Choke

The guillotine choke was a strong submission hold in the early UFC shows as submission defence was nowhere near at the standard it became. Smith had won his first round match against Ray Wizard with a guillotine choke, and applied the same hold to defeat Rhodes.
9. Royce Gracie continued to move on with a victory over Remco Pardoel. At this stage Gracie had advanced to the final with a combined time of 7 minutes and 46 seconds. Was this faster or slower than the combined time of Patrick Smith's first three fights?

Answer: Slower

Smith had beaten his first three opponents in a combined time of just 2 minutes and 35 seconds, with his longest fight going 67 seconds. Gracie on the other hand had fought for over 5 minutes against Minoki Ichihara in the first round. However Gracie took just 91 seconds to defeat Pardoel, with Gracie choking Pardoel out with the lapel of Pardoel's own gi.
10. So it came down to a final between defending champion Royce Gracie and the fresh Patrick Smith who came into the fight after three quick victories. Who won the fight to become the winner of the UFC 2 tournament?

Answer: Royce Gracie

Gracie won the fight in 77 seconds after dominating the fight both on his feet and on the mat. Despite fighting for nearly five times longer than Smith, Gracie quickly went on the attack and looked for a takedown, eventually doing so with a leg trip. Gracie then quickly transitioned into the mount position. Unusually for Gracie he did not opt to go for a submission, but instead began to punch away at Smith's unprotected face. Almost simultaneously Smith tapped out as his corner threw in the towel, giving Gracie the victory, making him the winner of 2nd UFC tournament.
