Answer: Uruguay

Argentina and Uruguay were the finalists in the first World Cup. Argentina was dominant in the first half but the Uruguayans were encouraged and mobilised by their captain's half-time talk. The team rose to the occasion, restored their lead and with one minute remaining Hector Castro made it clear that the Uruguayans would be the first team to rise up, up to take the Cup. Football's most coveted prize was proudly held by Nasazzi as the team players cried for joy.
2. When Brazil win the World Cup in 2002 it was their _____ triumph.

Answer: 5th

Brazil won the World Cup in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002 (their 7th World Cup final). In 1950 they were runners-up to Uruguay and in 1996 they were runners-up to France.

The 1966 World Cup was played in England. Brazil was beaten by Portugal and did not get past the first stage of the cup as they returned home early. England defeated West Germany 4-2 after extra time (it was 2-2 at fulltime) in what seemed to have been one of the most controversial World Cup Finals - did the ball cross the line for the third goal? England's hero in this match was Geoff Hurst, who scored the first hat-trick in a World Cup final.

Despite their valiant effort Czechoslovakia had to play second fiddle to Brazil in the 1962 World Cup. The Czechoslovakians struck first and led 1-0 but this was shortlived as Amarildo who had replaced the injured Pele took command of the ball and in two minutes he had scored the equaliser. Czechoslovakia was not allowed to recover as Zito and Vava both scored halfway through the second half thus ensuring Brazi's victory.

In 1950 India qualified for the World Cup but refused to participate as FIFA would not allow them to play without football boots. The official reason given by the All India Football Federation was that the team had insufficient practice time and there were disagreements on team selection.

History was made when the Jamaican 'Reggae Boyz' qualified for the 1998 World Cup. They were dubbed as one of the most colourful football teams in the tournament. The small Caribbean island finished third in Group H with one win, 2-1 against Japan, and did not progress past the group stage to the knock-out rounds.

Diego Maradona is one of the most controversial personalities in football. During the entire 1986 tournament he attempted or created more than 50% of his country's shots. He also dribbled three times more than any other player and won his team twice as many free kicks as any other player.
