Answer: Montreal Hockey Club

The very first Stanley Cup was awarded to the regular season champions of the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada, Montreal HC. This team, who would win the Cup four times between 1893 and 1903, are not related to the Montreal Canadiens.

Answer: Vancouver Millionaires

The Vancouver Millionaires of the PCHA defeated the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey Association (NHA) by three games to nil to become the first team from west of the Rocky Mountains to lift the Stanley Cup.

Answer: Seattle Metropolitans

The Seattle Metropolitans were champions of the PCHA in 1917, and defeated the Monteral Canadiens of the NHA by three games to one to lift the Stanley Cup, the first team from outside of Canada to do so.

Answer: Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators of the Canadian Division defeated the Boston Bruins of the American Division 2-0, with two games tied, to lift their last Stanley Cup. The team left the NHL in 1934 and continued as an amateur team until 1954 when they folded. The modern Ottawa Senators team, which joined the NHL in 1992, are not related to them.

The Montreal Canadiens were particularly dominant during the six team era. Between 1956 and 1960, they lifted the Stanley Cup on five consecutive occasions, with legendary coach Toe Blake in charge for each of them. The Original Six teams are the Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs.

The NHL doubled in size from six to twelve teams in 1967. Although an expansion team was guaranteed a spot in the Stanley Cup finals in each of the first three seasons of the enlarged league, the St Louis Blues were thrashed 4-0 by the Montreal Canadiens (twice) and Boston Bruins on each occasion.

A new name finally went on the famous old trophy in 1974 when the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Boston Bruins 4-2.

Answer: Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers hit the ground running when they joined the NHL, with Wayne Gretzky playing a huge part in their success. After losing the 1983 Stanley Cup finals to the New York Islanders, they ended the Islanders' quest for five-in-a-row the following year with a 4-1 finals triumph. This would be the first of five Stanley Cups in seven years for the team from Alberta.

Scotty Bowman began his head coaching career with the St Louis Blues in 1967 before taking over at Montreal in 1971. He won five Stanley Cups with the Canadiens between 1973 and 1979. His sixth triumph came with the Penguins in 1992, with three more following with the Red Wings between 1997 and 2002.

Answer: Season long lockout

The entire 2004-05 NHL season was cancelled after a players strike over the plan to introduce a salary cap, resulting in a lockout which wasn't finally resolved until the summer of 2005. This meant that no Stanley Cup was contested for the first time since 1919, when the Spanish Flu pandemic caused the match-up between the Montreal Canadiens and Seattle Metropolitans to be cancelled.

Answer: Colorado Avalanche

Colorado Avalanche were formerly known as the Quebec Nordiques, relocating to Denver in 1995. They won the Stanley Cup in their first season in Colorado, defeating the Florida Panthers 4-0 in the finals. Their second finals appearance in 2001 saw the triumph 4-3 over the New Jersey Devils. In 2022, they made it three out of three when they beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2.

By the conclusion of the 2022 finals, 27 of the 32 NHL teams had made the Stanley Cup finals at least once, and Colorado was the only one of them to have never lost a finals match-up.
