Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which year was chosen for the first-ever World Series Netball competition?

Answer: 2009

Prior to the announcement of the competition, England netball junior and senior squads trialed the new rules for a year. The competition was designed to take place annually over a three-day period in October.
2. Which northern UK city was chosen to host the first World Series Netball competition?

Answer: Manchester

A large indoor arena was built in Manchester to support the city's bids to host the Olympic Games in 1996 and 2000. It can seat up to 23,000 in an American-style layout with two tiers of 360 degree seating. It plays host to musical and sporting events. The Manchester Evening News began to sponsor the arena in 1998, and it became known as the MEN Arena.
3. How many teams were chosen to play in the first World Series Netball competition?

Answer: Six

According to the rules, in the first stage of the competition each team plays each other team once. The four teams at the top of the rankings go forward to the next stage where the team in 1st position plays the team in 4th, and the team in 2nd position plays the team in 3rd. The winners of these two matches face each other in the final.
4. How were the teams for the first World Series Netball competition chosen?

Answer: According to IFNA ranking

The International Federation of Netball Associations, with membership from more than 60 countries, agreed an international ranking system in 2008 based on the results of international test matches since 2004. A team must have played 8 test matches to be ranked.
5. Which of the following teams just missed out for inclusion in the first World Series Netball competition?

Answer: South Africa and Fiji

The teams chosen for the World Series Netball competition are those in the top six of the IFNA rankings at the end of the previous year. At the end of 2008, these were in alphabetical order, Australia, England, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, and Samoa.
6. In World Series Netball, goals scored from outside the circle count for double.

Answer: True

Until World Series Netball, all goals had to be scored from inside the shooting circle. This change was designed to make the game more exciting for spectators. As in the regular game, only the goal shooter and goal attack may score goals. A "long goal" scores two points instead of the usual one.
7. In the context of World Series Netball, what is a "Power Play"?

Answer: One quarter where goals score double points

Each team can nominate one quarter as its "Power Play". This means that, instead of every goal scoring just one point -- a goal scored in the shooting circle scores one point, doubled to two in the "Power Play", and a "long goal" scores two points and four in the "Power Play" quarter.
8. An international netball match consists of four 15 minute quarters. How does World Series Netball differ?

Answer: There are four 6 minute quarters

Shorter games were just one of the changes designed to make netball faster, less predictable, and more exciting for spectators.
9. In World Series Netball, how is it decided which team takes the Centre Pass after a goal has been scored?

Answer: Team which conceded the last goal

This differs from the usual game where Centre Passes alternate. The Centre still passes on the whistle signal.
10. Which of these innovations was not part of World Series Netball rules announced in 2008-09?

Answer: All players may play in all thirds

The areas in which players are onside remained the same. Coaching during play had not previously been allowed in international matches. Substitutions in regular games may be made only between quarters or when a player suffers injury. The limit of 30 seconds on timeouts for injury was another change designed to speed up the game.
