Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Billy Crystal hosted the Oscars after a long hiatus from the job. He returned to his usual entrance of inserting himself into various movies from the year. He did have one of his fellow actors help him by planting a kiss on him in the spirit of the movie he was parodying. Who was the actor that planted the kiss?

Answer: George Clooney

Clooney, never one to back away from a good joke, mocks the touching scene from his Oscar-nominated movie "The Descendants". Crystal steps in to the role of Clooney's dying wife, and receives a smooch from Clooney, much to the ire of all women across the world.
2. Tom Hanks was the night's first presenter, but prior to making the announcements of the first two awards, he made a shoutout to Carl Swaybo. Carl had achieved his 59th year at the Oscars employed as what?

Answer: Seat Filler

Carl Swaybo has been filling the seats of celebrities for 59 years while stars tend to their on camera duties, or go off to talk to the press after accepting an award. To think, the behinds he has shared space with after all that time, it would make quite a list.
3. Sandra Bullock presented the Best Foreign Language Film. She preceded her announcement by claiming to tell the essence of Foreign Language Film in the language of Mandarin. It obviously was NOT Mandarin. What language did she use?

Answer: German

She did preface the attempt at "Mandarin" by saying her mother spoke German so her Mandarin may have a slight German accent. The award was presented to the Irani entry, titled "A Separation".
4. A parody from the mockumentary masters led by Christopher Guest did a bit on focus groups, the clan of people asked to watch movies and give their opinions on it so studios can tweak what they saw to make the film better. What movie did this focus group screen?

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

The group, featuring great actors such as Fred Willard, Eugene Levy, Jennifer Coolidge and Catherine O'Hara, made comments such as "More flying monkeys", "Tell us more about Auntie Em and Uncle Henry", and "Why didn't she just tell Dorothy she could click her heels to go home? We all coulda gotten home sooner!" It was a great satire on how a handful of people could influence a movie that millions will see later.
5. Gwyneth Paltrow presented the Best Documentary Oscar with someone who claimed he was filming his own documentary called "The Presenter". Completely full of himself for the bit, who was the actor to overact for his personal documentary?

Answer: Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. brought along his own film crew for the bit, invading Paltrow's personal space for a nice comic effect. When it was all said and done, the Oscar went to the documentary "Undefeated".
6. Chris Rock presented Best Animated Feature Film, and took the time to point out that doing voice work for animated films is the "easiest work in the world". He also noted that it allows anybody to play any part regardless of race. For instance, black people can play what roles?

Answer: A donkey or a zebra

Chris Rock noted he could go into a sound studio, hear someone say "The line is, 'Let's go the store', and I say 'LET'S GO TO THE STORE!' Then they pay me a million dollars!" After all was said and done, "Rango" would win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
7. Christopher Plummer would win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and would break the record for oldest actor to win an Academy Award. Announced several times on the show, what was Plummer's age at the time of the win?

Answer: 82

While not the oldest nominee ever (Gloria Stuart from "Titanic") he did beat Jessica Tandy from "Driving Miss Daisy" for oldest winner by about two years. George Burns was the previous oldest male actor, also at the age of 80. He opened his acceptance speech by staring at his newly won Oscar and saying, "You're only two years older than me, darling...where have you been all my life?" He had only been nominated once before, in 2009 for "The Last Station".
8. Ludovic Bource was the victor in the category of Best Musical Score, but he made a point walking down the aisle to shake one of his fellow nominee's hands and put his hand to his heart to show respect. Who was this nominee that got special recognition?

Answer: John Williams

John Williams was actually nominated twice for the award in 2012, which marked his amazing 47th time he has been nominated. He has won five times. A resume like that does warrant a certain respect from a person who just won his first Oscar on his first nomination. Hans Zimmer was actually not nominated, but he was the conductor for the show's orchestra this year.
9. There was a montage of actors trying to decipher what makes a good movie. Three of them actually stated one of their favorite movies. Of these three pairings, which was NOT one of the matches of actor to favorite movie?

Answer: Adam Sandler and "Young Frankenstein"

Adam did mention he would hopefully begin to get through to his inner soul and the truth that lies there by the time he reaches 85. But there was no mention of a favorite movie. Other actors to try and figure out what makes a great movie were Seth Rogen, Steve Carell, and Robert Downey Jr.
10. One of the winners of an honorary award, besides Dick Smith and Oprah Winfrey, was James Earl Jones. His presenter described his resume, including "Star Wars", "The Lion King", and Shakespeare, and said whatever he did, it was "so damn GOOD." Who was this presenter?

Answer: Ben Kingsley

James Earl Jones said he was flabbergasted by the honor, and also used a word he learned in Britain, stating he was "gobsmacked".
11. The cast from "Bridesmaids" collectively presented three awards in the night. Rose Byrne and Melissa McCarthy decided to play a drinking game as part of their presentation. They made an agreement that they would take a drink whenever what was uttered on the show?

Answer: "Scorsese!"

Someone staged a shout of Martin Scorsese's name during the presentation which prompted the two actresses to pull out small bottles and down them in the middle of the show. The stunt was originated from the 2012 Golden Globe Awards.
12. As usual, there was an "In Memoriam" segment, honoring all of those who had passed in the last year. A touching rendition of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" was sung over the pictures. Who was the singer who performed the song admirably?

Answer: Esperanza Spalding

Some of those we have lost were Peter Falk, Ben Gazzara, and Elizabeth Taylor. Billy Crystal made a point to single out Gil Cates, former producer of the Academy Awards. Billy and Gil had collaborated on six different Oscar broadcasts, and he considered him a dear friend.
13. Jean Dujardin would take home the gold for Best Actor, and he opened his speech with a unique phrase very apropos for the moment. What did he say?

Answer: "I love your country."

Jean Dujardin made a point to say what his character, George Valentin, would say. It was in French, and unfortunately not translated. But it was a burst of joy that summed up his acceptance speech.
14. The most instant standing ovation came at the moment Meryl Streep was announced as the winner. The closest thing to royalty in the auditorium, she thanked her husband first, but then made a point to thank whom next?

Answer: Her makeup artist

Roy Helland has been her makeup and hairstylist for thirty years. She has worked with Roy since 1982, and she won't work with anyone else. Considering the deepness she gets into each of her roles and the fact her makeup allows that to happen for the audience as well, he certainly earned his Oscar earlier in the night for "The Iron Lady".
15. The director for "The Artist" took half of the acceptance speech for the Best Picture Oscar, but spent most of it talking away from the microphone, because whom he was thanking was onstage already. Who was he thanking?

Answer: His wife

His wife happens to be Berenice Bejo, the actress nominated for Best Supporting Actress. It was a bit awkward to end the show with, someone barely audible talking away from the audience, but it is live television.
