Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The title of this episode is "The Game." To what game(s) does this refer?

Answer: Poker

The show opens with Tripp and Nick discussing the Better Manhattan Conference, which is a convention for real estate moguls. Tripp tells Nick that the reason that everyone attends is the annual high-stakes poker game. This year, both Simon Elder and Tripp are attending - a sure sign that something interesting is going to happen. "The Game" of the title undoubtedly also refers to the cat-and-mouse game going on between Tripp and Simon over Nick's loyalty.
2. When looking for a job, what skill(s) - other than an impressive ability to zone out - does Jeremy tell Nick he has?

Answer: Driving

Nick prepares a slide show of the many different companies that the Darlings own in order to help Jeremy determine what kind of a job he wants. When idea after idea is shot down (hotels = trouble; concert venues = stolen spotlight; and pharmaceuticals = well, you can guess), Nick tries a different tack.

He asks Jeremy what his skills are, and Jeremy claims to have excellent driving abilities. And then he promptly wrecks a car.
3. Which of the following errands does Karen carry out in this episode in order to prepare for her and Freddy's marriage?

Answer: All of the other choices are correct

Karen and Freddy go down to City Hall to get their marriage license, but only after Nick assures them that they have to go in person. Freddy manages to make the wait at City Hall more amusing by recording himself rapping, but when the couple finally makes their way to the front of the line, Karen is informed that she is still married. Apparently, Dutch neglected to file her divorce proceedings with her last husband, Sebastian Fleet, and so she must get divorced before she can get her license. Karen gets Sebastian to re-sign the papers, but not before succumbing to his charms.

After the divorce debacle is over, Karen decides to move up the date of the wedding in an effort move on with her life.
4. Simon Elder asks Nick to do something unethical in the big game that's coming up. In order to ensure Nick's cooperation, what does Elder offer as a bribe?

Answer: A copy of the real crash report on Dutch's plane

Simon Elder and Nick have a heart-to-heart, in which Simon discusses a vision that he and Dutch shared for Manhattan. He's vague about the details, but solar panels and improved transportation are a few of the highlights. Simon then segues into his need for Darling Plaza, a piece of real estate owned by Tripp. Simon asks Nick to make sure that Tripp bets the property in "the game," and Nick impassively asks why. Simon evades the question, and just when you wonder why on earth he would expect Nick to do it, he pulls out a trump card.

The police investigation found no evidence of sabotage on Dutch's plane, but Simon claims that report has been doctored. In exchange for Nick's help in securing Darling Plaza, he will allow Nick to see the original crash report.
5. Jeremy ultimately becomes a valet, but on his first day crashes a customer's car. How does Jeremy initially cover up his mistake?

Answer: purchasing a look-alike car to replace it

Jeremy panics when he realizes that he might be fired on his first day, so he goes out and purchases the same model of car. He switches the license plates, and the customer retrieves her car without suspecting anything. However, Jeremy realizes that he has relied on his wealth too often to get him out of scrapes.

When the customer returns on a separate occasion, he tells her the truth about crashing her car. Then he lies and tells her the car she's driving is a rental (so she won't know about his money).

The attractive female customer is extremely understanding, She tells him to fix her car and she won't tell his boss. Jeremy follows this exchange with an invitation to coffee, and she refuses because he's a lowly valet. The other valets are astonished that he doesn't use his name, but it appears that Jeremy might be growing up a little bit.
6. Sebastian Fleet, Karen's ex-husband, and Letitia believe that a 'third person' in the marriage was the reason Sebastian and Karen's marriage didn't work out. Who is this 'third person'?

Answer: Nick

When Karen is over at Sebastian's getting her divorce, the two reminisce over their marriage. Then Sebastian adds that he's happy she's finally marrying Nick. Karen is confused, and explains that she's marrying Freddy. It's Sebastian's turn to be surprised, and he tells Karen that he was sure that she was carrying a torch for Nick throughout their marriage.

This revelation makes Karen stop and think about her feelings for Nick and for Freddy, and is the impetus behind her decision to move up the date of her wedding.
7. The betting at "the game" escalates rapidly, until the grand total at stake is $400 million dollars (in cash and real estate). Who claims these winnings?

Answer: Simon Elder

Only three players stay in for this enormously lucrative (or costly, depending on your perspective) hand: Simon Elder, Tripp Darling, and an unnamed man. All have tossed deeds into the pot, although Nick and Tripp argue over whether Tripp should bet Darling Financial Center or Darling Plaza.

After a good deal of persuasion, Nick does convince Tripp to bet Darling Plaza. The unnamed card player flips his cards first, and he has a straight. Elder trounces this hand with a flush, and Tripp silently mucks (tosses his cards facedown on the table, declaring that he can't beat the hand). We learn later that Elder had the dealer on his payroll, so it's likely that Tripp had good (to keep him in) but not great (less than a flush) cards.
8. With which Darling has Brian Jr. spent most of his time since moving into the Darling mansion?

Answer: Juliet

Brian Jr. has spent most of his time with Juliet, with whom he goes shopping. The implication is that he spends even more time with Juliet than he does with Brian, although with shared sleeping quarters and such, the actual time he spends with Brian might add up to more (which is why I didn't include Brian as an answer choice).

However, Brian gets angry when Juliet buys Brian Jr. a $30,000 watch. Juliet quickly and effectively replies that he only wanted the watch because it was the same kind Brian had. Brian then realizes that he's been neglecting his son, and begins to spend quality time with Brian Jr., teaching him backgammon and proper pancake/syrup-pouring technique.
9. Does Nick trick Tripp Darling into betting Darling Plaza against his will?

Answer: No

At first glance, it appears that Nick did trick Tripp into losing Darling Plaza. Nick (a) brings the deed to the game against Tripp's wishes and (b) convinces him to bet it. However, a flashback reveals that this is not the truth. After his conference with Simon Elder, Nick tells Tripp of Elder's request. Tripp promptly agrees to bet the property, in an effort to back up his earlier promise to do anything to help Nick find out who killed Dutch.

The argument at the poker game was staged. Their performance was good enough to fool me, and it seems to have convinced Simon Elder as well.
10. Which of the following events does NOT occur during this episode?

Answer: Tripp bribes Carmelita to break things off with Patrick, and she leaves town.

Tripp attempts to bribe Carmelita, but she definitely does NOT accept the money. She stays with Patrick, and eventually tells him what Tripp tried to do. Patrick is furious and confronts Tripp, who maintains that he is doing what is best for Patrick. Patrick storms out, and the next time we see him he is seen walking into Simon Elder's office. Jeremy tells his "Spiderman" anecdote to his coworkers, a story that thoroughly impresses his fellow valets. Nick meets again with Simon Elder, who gives him the crash report as promised.

The report implicates Norman Exley, Dutch's mechanic. Even if Exley really did tamper with the plane, however, it's unlikely that he would have done it without being paid handsomely for it, so the real culprit is still unknown. Additionally, the validity of the report is still in question (e.g. how did Elder get the only 'real' version?). Nevertheless, Nick takes this new report to the police, who tell Nick that Norman Exley was found dead in his apartment earlier that morning.

The plot thickens...
