Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whose morning routines are contrasted in the opening scenes?

Answer: Nick's and Tripp's

This episode opens with a montage of Nick and Tripp getting ready to go to work in the morning. Tripp wakes up alone and has servants shave, dress and cook for him. Then he has the time to write in his journal. Nick, on the other hand, wakes up with his wife beside him, but then navigates the morning unskillfully.

He cuts himself shaving, burns himself eating breakfast, cannot find the suit he wants to wear, and is pressed for time. The point of this comparison is to highlight the difference between the lives of ordinary people and the filthy rich, although Nick's $2.5 million salary will alter his 'ordinary' status quickly enough.
2. How does Brian explain Brian Jr.'s presence to his wife?

Answer: His parents were killed in a train accident

Brian does not want to confess his affair to his wife, and plans to take the child back to his mother the next day. Therefore, he tells his wife that Brian Jr. is a Swedish orphan whose parents died in a bullet train disaster. Upon discovering that the child's mother has fled the country, Brian reluctantly brings his son back home with him.

He knows that he will have to tell his wife the truth eventually, but asks Brian Jr. to maintain the charade for a little while longer, temporarily renaming him "Gustave."
3. What crime does the suspicious plane mechanic (Norman Exley) admit to in this episode?

Answer: Blackmailing Brian about his illegitimate son

Nick finally hears back from Norman Exley, whom Brian had covertly paid $100,000 for unknown reasons. Fearing that Exley, who worked on Dutch's plane, might have been responsible for the crash, Nick is surprised when Exley readily admits that he knew about Brian's "secret love baby" and extorted money from him. Exley probably knew nothing of Patrick's affair (or Patrick would be paying blackmail too), and Kenneth, Tripp's brother, was assassinated. Exley leaves Nick with one last comment: that Letitia and Dutch often flew off together, and Tripp had to have been unhappy about it.
4. Who occupies the penthouse suite at the hotel where Juliet is living?

Answer: Juliet's archenemy

Juliet is living at the Argyle Hotel to assert her independence from the Darling family. When Jeremy comes to visit her, we see that she is in a plush hotel suite, but she complains that the penthouse is occupied. Juliet begs Jeremy to find out who the occupant is. Jeremy bribes his away upstairs using his supposed partnership with Justin Timberlake, and finds out that the room is occupied by Natalie Kimpton and her mother. All signs point to Natalie being a former lover of Jeremy's ("Remember St. Barts?"), but she is definitely an enemy of Juliet's (some sort of signature perfume/bangs debacle).

Their animosity makes Jeremy hesitant to get involved with Natalie, but he changes his mind quickly. However, to cover his tracks, Jeremy tells Juliet that the penthouse is occupied by a Belgian chef.
5. Whose presence in Patrick's Senate campaign photo is vetoed by Letitia?

Answer: Freddy's

Karen is upset that Letitia will not allow her fiancé to be in the picture. Letitia believes that Karen's multiple marriages are an embarrassment to the family, and refuses to allow Freddy's presence. Brian Jr. is present at the photo shoot as an observer, and only because Nick brought him. Juliet, as a member of the family, is welcome to be in the shot, and Nick never asks to be included.

He does not consider himself a member of the Darling family, even though his father did. Nor do the Darlings seem to believe he would be a fitting addition to the photograph.

However, Nick does get to perform the thrilling task of informing Freddy that he cannot be in it. Freddy jumps to the conclusion that Nick is the one barring him from the picture, and believes Nick is still in love with Karen.
6. Does Nick confront Letitia about her affair with Dutch in this episode?

Answer: Yes

After discovering the affair and beginning to suspect that someone has murdered his father, Nick tries to dig up more information. He realizes that he needs to know whether Tripp knows about the affair, because revenge on Dutch would be a powerful motive for murder.

After discussing his options with Lisa, she advises him to go the source for straight answers (advice rarely followed in television). However, in this instance, Nick does seek out Letitia, and she does not deny her involvement with Dutch.

She also does not know if Tripp is aware of it, but suggests that Tripp's journal would be the best place to find that information.
7. What mysterious information does Nick find in Tripp's journal?

Answer: Inked-out writing and a picture of a plane crashing

Nick notes that Tripp writes in great detail in his journal, and the majority of his topics are quite ordinary. However, Nick comes across a page that contains a sketch of a plane nose-diving into the water and some words that have been scratched out. Nick doesn't say much about his conclusions, but I would venture to guess that he is frustrated that the journal has neither cleared Tripp entirely nor unequivocally indicted him.

Therefore, Nick is in the same position in which he started: He still suspects Tripp, but has no real evidence that Tripp wanted Dutch dead.
8. What is unusual about Juliet at the family photo shoot?

Answer: She is portrayed by a body double

Juliet flatly refuses to come to the family photo shoot (even though she temporarily wavers when she discovers there will be lions present), claiming she is now 'independent' from the family. Apparently, in Juliet's world renting a room in a ritzy hotel on her father's credit card is not dependency, but being present at a family portrait is.

In any event, Nick's assistant Daisy hires a stand-in for Juliet. Tripp is not thrilled about this deception, but the family's picture is taken with the fake Juliet anyway.
9. Does Tripp confront Letitia about her affair with Dutch in this episode?

Answer: No

Nick admits during the photo shoot that he took Tripp's journal because he was looking for information about his father's death. When Tripp asks him what possible motive he would have for killing Dutch, Letitia runs out of the room and Nick is hesitant to mention the affair, on the chance that Tripp does not know about it. Tripp follows Letitia, and Letitia seems to expect Tripp to mention her affair.

However, Tripp merely says how hurt he is by Nick's accusation, and reassures Letitia by telling her that they will sort their way through this mess together. Letitia, out of relief and love, kisses Tripp soundly, and we are left wondering whether he knows about the affair or not.
10. What is the name of the person whose file Nick finds in Dutch's briefcase?

Answer: Simon Elder

Nick struggles to open the briefcase that was recovered from his father's plane crash throughout the episode. In this final scene, Tripp suggests that Nick try 712, Letitia's birthday. As the briefcase clicks open, both men wince at the proof that Dutch and Letitia were involved, and it is clear that Tripp is in agony. Nick removes a dossier on one Simon Elder, whom we've not met. Tripp suggests Nick look more closely at Elder if he wants to find out who killed his father.

The episode ends as Nick riffles through the briefcase, seeking answers about his father, and Tripp experiences his private pain over Letitia and Dutch's affair.
