Answer: Sir Walter Raleigh

It was Essex versus Raleigh during the Ascension Day celebration for the thirtieth year of Elizabeth on the throne. During the tournament, someone became a little nervous about Essex getting hurt.
2. Who took Essex to his new rooms in the palace?

Answer: The Queen

Elizabeth brought Essex to his new rooms that used to belong to the late Earl of Leicester. The pictures of Leicester's ancestors still hung on the wall in the room. During this private time, Essex and the Queen made out but the Queen ended it quickly.
3. Who was NOT a member of the Privy Council?

Answer: The Earl of Essex

Robert Cecil had been appointed to the Council prior to Essex's appointment, much to his chagrin. It didn't take long for Essex to step on some toes, including the Queen's.
4. After an argument with the Queen in full view of the Council, what did Essex do to the Queen?

Answer: Turned his back to her

Elizabeth's response to Essex turning his back to her was to strike him with a balled up fist. Essex reached for his sword, saying he never would have taken that from her father.
5. After quickly reconciling with the Queen, to where did Essex beg to go?

Answer: Lisbon

He was in debt and needed the expedition to get out of debt, but the Queen forbade him to go. In an effort to keep him home, she gave him the taxes on the monopolies of sweet wine. After the Queen rose from bed the next day, he left without her blessing but came home covered with glory.
6. Following the Queen's fainting spell, who were initially blamed for her illness?

Answer: The Spaniards

Walsingham, of course, always blamed the Spaniards but Essex blamed Doctor Lopez. He had tortured some men to prove Lopez was at fault for the Queen's fainting spell.
7. In an attempt to show how displeased the Queen was with him, what did Essex portray himself to be?

Answer: Dead

During the 'funeral procession' Essex portrayed himself to be dead, complete with white and gray make up to make him appear dead. He had his arms crossed and his hands holding his sword. He was followed by a 'mourning' Earl of Southampton.
8. What game did Elizabeth invent while with Essex in her chambers?

Answer: Essex's Follies

The rules were the Queen would take all the cards and Essex would try to take them by any means needed. They then ran around the Queen's chambers laughing, screaming with delight and smiling.
9. Who broke the news of Essex impregnating Lady Frances Walsingham to the Queen?

Answer: Sir Francis Walsingham

Sir Francis Walsingham had entered the Queen's chamber where Essex was and asked to be left alone. The Queen ordered everyone out including Essex, only to have Walsingham say it included the Earl. He then broke the news of his daughter becoming pregnant by Essex and asked Essex of his intentions. Not surprisingly, the Queen threw a major hissy fit.
10. Who died first following Essex's 'funeral'?

Answer: Sir Francis Walsingham

Elizabeth had heard of Walsingham being ill and he said his time was nearly up. Elizabeth strongly ordered him to get better but sadly, the next scene was his funeral.
