'The Entertainer' Trivia Quiz

Answer: Piano

Fran, played by Tamsin Greig, is completely without direction in this series. She no longer has her gift shop, Nifty Gifty, and therefore takes up a lot of different activities and buys a lot of things she doesn't really need to relieve her boredom.

Bernard sells the last copy of 'Blue Sands' to an attractive customer. The copy was reserved for someone else, and Bernard blames Manny for selling it. Manny gets punched by the large angry customer who reserved it.

According to the DVD commentary, the sunglasses were purchased by the show's producer, Nira Park, on her holiday. They are very big brown sunglasses and look quite awful. They are worn by Fran and Bernard because they are hungover and by Manny because he has a black eye.

Josef is an elderly blind man who teaches piano. Fran doesn't like him because he hits her hands when she plays badly and he keeps squeezing her face. She convinces him that he no longer needs his services by forcing Manny, who is a brilliant pianist, to sit inside the piano playing it with spoons.

Manny turns on the radio while Fran and Bernard are at the pub and starts absent-mindedly playing along. He is shocked to realise that he can play the piano very well. Manny is played by Bill Bailey, who is also a stand-up comic who incorporates a lot of music into his shows.

The cast joke on the DVD commentary that of course he should be able to play along since he is also playing the version of the music on the radio. The music is called 'Rage over a Lost Penny' by Beethoven. Later Manny plays Bach to convince Josef that Fran can suddenly play piano brilliantly.

Answer: Ketchup

Manny hits the table in the cafe in order to make a point and hits the squeezy tomato-shaped ketchup bottle. It is very impressive as it him right in the eye and runs down his face. Luckily, he is wearing sunglasses because of being punched by the irate customer.

Kate is played by Nina Conti, who is a stage ventriloquist as well as an actress. She uses monkey puppets in her act, which is very funny.

Answer: Birds

The book is called 'Ornithology of Britain' and Bernard tells Kate to avoid it because 'it's just...birds'. He shows her the book as a diversion while Manny hides inside the piano to play it so Bernard can pretend to play jazz. In the first ever episode of 'Black Books', Manny goes into the shop to buy a copy of 'The Little Book of Calm', and Bernard offers him one instead called 'Tanks'!
