Question 1 of 15
1. The 'FunTrivia Regulars' group is debating again while playing through another marathon of games. What are they so anxious to find out? What is the best video game genre?

"Everyone loves the classics!" Kyle begins. "Arcade games are what started it all, how can this not be the best genre out there? In fact, just the other day, I saw a kid playing "Pac-man" on the Game Boy Advance! You know, the main character is just a simple yellow guy which eats dots, how is that not cool?"
What is not one of the four ghosts in the arcade game "Pac-man"?
Hint

Question 2 of 15
2. "Speaking of classics," Bruce begins, "who can forget the fighting genre and its most memorable contributions to the gaming world. Everybody knows 'Virtua Fighter', and 'Mortal Kombat' but does anyone really remember the fighting games made notorious for their incredibly low-quality? After seeing a copy at a used game store 'Shaq-Fu' is one of those horrid games that fits into that category. There have been plenty of bad fighters to grace consoles over the years but 'Shaq Fu' takes the cake. Not only did it feature a terribly uninteresting story, it starred a character who nobody ever wanted to play as: Shaquille O'Neal. It was still a well marketed game and sold many copies. Thankfully, the fighting genre couldn't get any worse than this game, and more often than not, the genre improved by year." What was the biggest problem that graced the fighting game 'Shaq-Fu'? Hint

Question 3 of 15
3. "Anyone ever hear of 'GunZ'?" KvK asks. There was no response. He quickly hops on the computer and within the hour the game downloads. Everyone quickly watches as he plays the game. Soon everyone wants a turn at the MMORPG, 'GunZ', because of it's simple main point. What is the main objective? Hint

Question 4 of 15
4. The topic quickly shifts to sports games when the MMORPG topic ends. "Does anyone know of a football game for the Nintendo 64?" Triviaballer asks. Everyone in the room quickly responds and chaos ensues as two factions emerge between the football "purists" who favor the "Madden" football series and those who favor the sensationalized take on the sport offered by "NFL Blitz". Of the following, which is NOT a way that the game of "NFL Blitz" differs from the actual NFL rules and the "Madden" football series? Hint

Question 5 of 15
5. Qrayx gets frustrated with always losing and finally blurts out "this stinks! We need something we can all enjoy; something cooperative." Qrayx then realizes that he isn't good at anything with a cooperative setting, so he suggests that they all try their skills by taking turns at a one-player game, and assisting each other in any way possible. This left him, also, with only a few different genres to choose from.
Qrayx is a self-proclaimed "Banjo-Kazooie" expert, and suggests that they play the old N64 game, as they are all getting tired of the high-paced games of the newer systems. Which genre does "Banjo-Kazooie" fall into?
Hint

Question 6 of 15
6. "Heh, that was fun," SFA comments after the group is finished playing with Qrayx's guidelines, then pulls out his Game Boy Advance and starts up the game inside. "You guys can figure out what we play next, I'll wait for you and play a good RPG." As he goes to sit down in a chair in the corner of the room, he quickly comes across a random battle with a few moderately tough enemies. "I'd better deal with these fast," he thinks, quickly getting to his Black Mage and looking past spells such as Dark and Sleepra, and choosing Firaga to take them out. Which game might SFA be playing? Hint

Question 7 of 15
7. "Enough of this," said Kurama Z, "I want to play a game that requires more thinking. I know, how about 'Dr. Mario 64'?" Kyleisalive, KvK, Qrayx, and Kurama Z all start playing multiplayer on the famous puzzle game. After Kyleisalive beats the other three players with no problem whatsoever, they ask him to play story mode to unlock the last character, Metal Dr. Mario. Then it comes time to pick the difficulty. How many different levels of difficulty are possible for him to choose? Hint

Question 8 of 15
8. "Shooting is fun", says Bruce as a maniacal laugh ensues him. Everyone is frightened but Bruce continues, "Shooters are the greatest genre of games, because they are a great way of taking out pent-up rage." Once again, the group is scared by Bruce's remark. Bruce goes on, "You remember the greatest games of the genre such as 'Half-Life', 'Red Faction', 'Goldeneye 007', and even 'Doom', but do you remember the real roots of the genre and the first incarnation of a true first-person shooter?" One person mentions 'Castle Wolfenstein' but Bruce tells him that, that is wrong. After much deliberation, the group gives up, confused and bewildered. What two games claim to be the original first-person shooters? Hint

Question 9 of 15
9. "Let's all do a WiFi race!" KvK exclaims randomly. Quickly everyone agrees, hoping to get away from the other systems which they have been playing so much. Many platform games have been re-released on different systems. Which two platform games are not one in the same? Hint

Question 11 of 15
11. "Aw, man. What can we play now? I'm getting bored of RPG's and Racing," moans SFA. "Yeah, we need something new," says KvK. Qrayx jumps up, suddenly. "I know, Flight Sims! We haven't played any of those, yet." The group decides to pick out a Flight Simulation game. They all grab their favorite ones to choose from, but someone ends up choosing a game of a different genre. Who? Hint

Question 12 of 15
12. "So, who's up for a little aerobic workout while we play video games?" Triviaballer asks. The group's puzzled responses let Triviaballer know that they have no idea what he was talking about. Triviaballer continues, "I was referring to the 'Dance Dance Revolution' game that you can find at arcades". The group tries to protest stating that they can't dance, but eventually they give in and end up enjoying the simple and addictive gameplay. What is the basic objective in the 'Dance Dance Revolution' series of arcade games? Hint

Question 13 of 15
13. "That did involve a fair bit of thinking," SFA comments after "Dance Dance Revolution's" session, "but not enough for me. Heh, what about some "Fire Emblem", with us alternating turns? We haven't tried a strategy game yet." The group agrees, and watch as he starts up his game of choice. While playing, they control various characters such as Ike, Mia, Mist and Soren. What is this "Fire Emblem" game's English subtitle? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

What is not one of the four ghosts in the arcade game "Pac-man"?

Answer: Stinky

The four ghosts from this classic arcade game were Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde. Over the years, the Pac-Man character has made a slight comeback on the Game Boy Advance and in various "Namco Anniversary and Museum" games. His original game, which spanned 256 levels, is a basic maze where you have to control Pac-man in order to eat the little dots. Along the way, the four ghosts will try to attack you, but you can stop them by eating the power pills in the level. This will make them change colour, and it will allow you to eat them for points. You will also have the chance to eat fruits for points (like cherries and grapes). Over the years, the game has spawned many sequels such as "Ms. Pac-man", and in 1982, he was "MAD Magazine's" Man of the Year.

Thankfully, the fighting genre couldn't get any worse than this game, and more often than not, the genre improved by year." What was the biggest problem that graced the fighting game 'Shaq-Fu'?

Answer: Fights could never be finished in the allotted time due to a shoddy hit detection system.

'Shaq-Fu' was originally released in 1994 for the Sega Game Gear, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, and Game Boy. Th game was published by Electronic Arts and featured Shaquille O'Neal as the main playable character. The story of the game was as follows: Whilst traveling to Tokyo in honor of a charity basketball game, he somehow ends up in a Kung-Fu dojo, and gets warped into another dimension. He is then forced to rescue a boy from a mummy named Sett-Ra. Sounds exciting? It really isn't. It is regarded as one of the worst games ever due to its shoddy hit detection system and its inclusion of Shaquille O'Neal. The hit detection system only allowed hits to the exact center of your opponent. As a result, battles went all the way through the allotted time limit. Regardless of its faults, the game is now considered a collectors item, and due to its abundance, upon release, it is super easy to find at almost any used game store.

Answer: Just to kill everyone that is in the same game room

The game 'GunZ' is a MMORPG and a shooting game (as you can tell by the name), but that is not 100% correct. As you enter a game room there are different modes of gameplay such as: Deathmatch, where you just kill everyone, or Team Deathmatch, where your team tries to eradicate the other team and other modes. The weapons include a variety of guns, a variety of grenades and variety of combat weapons like swords and kodachis.

Answer: An unlimited number of laterals are allowed on a single play.

The fast-paced, arcade style of the game of "NFL Blitz" is likely its most appealing feature. The original game heavily favors the offense as the player's defensive players controlled by the AI provide little help. "NFL Blitz" adheres to the general NFL scoring and play rules, but there are no penalties. Although it is rarely seen, multiple laterals are allowed on a single play in the NFL.

Qrayx then realizes that he isn't good at anything with a cooperative setting, so he suggests that they all try their skills by taking turns at a one-player game, and assisting each other in any way possible. Qrayx is a self-proclaimed "Banjo-Kazooie" expert, and suggests that they play the old N64 game, as they are all getting tired of the high-paced games of the newer systems. Which genre does "Banjo-Kazooie" fall into?

Answer: Adventure

The "Banjo-Kazooie" series focuses more on special abilities and collecting items than it does just bashing around a bunch of enemies to complete the game. There're a few puzzles and riddles mixed in with areas that require reflexes and skill. Quite often you'll find yourself having to use certain moves to perform specific acts, or acquire particular items, in a certain order, with a few bad guys in the way (which really don't pose much of a threat, rather than just slowing you down).

"I'd better deal with these fast," he thinks, quickly getting to his Black Mage and looking past spells such as Dark and Sleepra, and choosing Firaga to take them out. Which game might SFA be playing?

Answer: Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls

The question was referring to the "Final Fantasy I" part of the game. A Black Mage learns offensive spells, such as the three mentioned. The spell Dark has a chance of inflicting the Darkness status condition to all enemies, while Sleepra has a fairly good chance of inflicting the Sleep status condition on one enemy, and Firaga quite simply inflicts some good fire damage on all foes. Although the one correct game is a fairly popular Game Boy Advance RPG, the rest are as well.

Answer: Four

Story mode is a series of games that you can play using either Dr. Mario or Wario. Depending on who you use, you can unlock Metal Dr. Mario and Vampire Wario. After beating story mode once on normal difficulty or higher, you unlock one of those characters and it tells you how to play story mode with a higher difficulty level. If you press the "Z" button while the hard difficulty is highlighted, it changes into S-Hard difficulty. "Dr. Mario", is not only found on its original system, but it is also available as a Game Boy Advance classic game, much like "Ice Climbers", "Donkey Kong", and "Metroid".

One person mentions 'Castle Wolfenstein' but Bruce tells him that, that is wrong. After much deliberation, the group gives up, confused and bewildered. What two games claim to be the original first-person shooters?

Answer: 'Spasism' and 'Maze War'

As the answer says, the two games that claim to be the original first-person shooter are 'Spasism' and 'Maze War'. Although most credibility of the claim goes to 'Spasism', 'Maze War' has plenty of persuasive evidence, as well. 'Spasism' was 3D networked game with four planetary systems that needed to be defended and eight people who defended each one. It was developed and released in March of 1974. In the game, players flew around space in wire frame space-ships, all in the first person, and attempted to shoot one another down. 'Maze War', is also a networked 3D first person shooter that claims to be the original. In the game, players moved around a maze while trying to eliminate one another with guns. The development company doesn't remember when it made the game, but it is rumored that development occurred in the summer of 1973, with a fully networked version available in 1974. Whether 'Spasism' or 'Maze War' is the beginning of the shooter genre we will likely never know, but one thing's for sure: these two games brought to the public a magical genre that has evolved to a cultural phenomena, and like any genre with anything offensive in it, plenty of political attention.

Quickly they all connect to WiFi on their DS' and start up Mario Kart DS, a racing game. They all choose different characters. Which of these could KvK pick?

Answer: Wario

Wario is the only of those characters that is playable. The other characters are just variations of playable characters. Diddy Kong, Donkey Kong; Waluigi, Luigi; Baby Bowser, Bowser.
Racing games have remained steady in popularity since they were first released. Some of the more popular series of racing games have been the "Mario Cart", "Gran Turismo", and "Need For Speed". Each systems has some pretty popular racing games, and many have different imaginative themes or cars.

Some of the popular ones have been "Psychonauts", "Banjo-Kazooie", "Spyro" and others, but the most famous have to be from the Mario series." Many platform games have been re-released on different systems. Which two platform games are not one in the same?

Answer: "Donkey Kong Country (SNES)" and "Donkey Kong Land (GBC)"

"Donkey Kong Land" and "Donkey Kong Country" were two completely different games because both had levels and stages which varied in every way. In both games, both Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong need to stop the evil K. Rool.
Still think you haven't played a platform game? Well, they're still making them, and they've been some of the most popular games released. Some of these include Gamecube's "Super Mario Sunshine", PS2's "Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus", Xbox's "Psychonauts", and classic favourites like "Conker's Bad Fur Day" for the N64 and the original "Donkey Kong" arcade game.
In platform games, players need to navigate through 2-D or 3-D areas while jumping to different levels, gaining new powers, and fighting enemies. The term 'platform game' was used because the original games (like "Donkey Kong" and "Super Mario Bros" focused more on jumping on platforms than actually shooting an enemy. As more and more new games are produced, the original concept still remains, but more unique ideas are added.

We haven't played any of those, yet." The group decides to pick out a Flight Simulation game. They all grab their favorite ones to choose from, but someone ends up choosing a game of a different genre. Who?

Answer: Triviaballer who chose "Starcraft"

Flight Simulators are the games where you take control of a flying craft. Most Flight Simulators are Combat Simulators, and incorporate dogfights (mid-air fighting between aircraft) and other aerial challenges. Most Flight Simulators require a Joystick or game pad to be played (if you are using a PC). "Starcraft", made by Blizzard, is a Real-Time Strategy game.
Of course, Flight Simulators are a small part of the simulator genre. Some other popular Simulation games have been "RollerCoaster Tycoon", "Simcity" and "The Sims".

The group tries to protest stating that they can't dance, but eventually they give in and end up enjoying the simple and addictive gameplay. What is the basic objective in the 'Dance Dance Revolution' series of arcade games?

Answer: Follow the pattern of arrows that appear on the arcade screen and the rhythm of the song by stepping on the corresponding arrows on a dance pad.

The 'Dance Dance Revolution' game series were first introduced in Japan in 1998. Developed and published by Konami, more than 90 different versions of the series have been released around the world. The 'Dance Dance Revolution' games have become so popular that worldwide competitions are held and even some fitness experts have recommended playing the game as an aerobic workout. These games have been released on systems by Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo.

What is this "Fire Emblem" game's English subtitle?

Answer: Path of Radiance

"Fire Emblem: Rekka no ken" (or "The Blazing Sword"), was the seventh game in the series, and had no English subtitle, due to it being the first "Fire Emblem" game released outside Japan. "Fire Emblem: Seima no Kōseki" (or "The Sacred Stones"), the eighth "Fire Emblem" installment, and "Fire Emblem: Sōen no Kiseki" (or "Path of Radiance") kept the series going after that and were also released outside Japan.

14. "Sorry guys," KvK says grinning. Quickly he pulls a large box out of the closet. An Xbox 360, along with four controllers and a copy of "Call of Duty 2". After about an hour of multiplayer of this war game, they decide to switch around on campaign. Within two hours they beat it and are watching the ending credits. One scene portrays a man breaking open a door, what follows?

Answer: He gets shot

"Call of Duty 2" is a war game that follows the facts. It goes through three campaigns each with nine missions. Russia, in which you hold back the Nazi troops invading Stalingrad and British, you try to take out all of Rommel's troops. There is also American, in which you try to storm Normandy and a few other towns in France. "Call of Duty 2" was the first War-based game and one of the original games released on the Xbox 360.

15. "Well, let's end our games on a spooky note," Kyle says. "I'm interested in playing "Resident Evil" for a bit." In this final game of our debate, in the Horror/Survival genre, you can initially play as Chris Redfield or what other character?

Answer: Jill Valentine

"Resident Evil 1" can be played on the Gamecube, PS1, PC, or Sega Saturn. Like many of the other "Resident Evil" games, it's quite full of zombies, the T-Virus, and other weird things. Rebecca Chambers doesn't play too big of a role in this game, but in the prequel, "Resident Evil 0" for the Gamecube, she takes center stage. The series has spawned many sequels. In fact, "Resident Evil 4" was known as one of the best games of 2005.
In "Resident Evil", Chris is often known as a more difficult character to play as because he can carry less items. Jill can carry six while Chris can only carry four. Plus, each one starts with and finds diferent items throughout the game.

Well, finally it's over. We at the "Funtrivia Regulars" group have finally gotten through the many genres of video games that have been given to us. Hope you had fun! :)
